With Big Green Teams
May 1956

DARTMOUTH'S spring teams headed southward on March 25 in the midst of a driving snow storm and returned fifteen days later in the midst of still another one. Even in the South, Big Green teams were hampered by rain and cold, damp weather which forced cancellation of some games and practice sessions.

By mid-April, however, the Hanover winter was beginning to disappear and the snow was largely gone, although wet grounds would probably remain until May. Before taking a closer look at the spring trips and teams, there is some late March news to report.

Following the NCAA basketball tourney, forward Ron Judson of Brooklyn, N.Y., was elected captain of the basketball team and also was selected for the coaches' All-Ivy first team. Center Jim Francis and 1955 Captain Toby Julian were named to the second Ivy Team. The track team closed out its winter season in late March with an easy 71-33 win over Columbia. The swimming team ended its season at the Eastern Intercollegiates, where sophomore Ernie Drosdick took second in the 200-yard medley, Duke Hust finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, and the Big Green relay team of Dick Karslake, Bill Bahrenburg, Drosdick and Hust placed third behind Yale and Harvard in the 400-yard relay. The squash team also finished at an intercollegiate tourney, with only Jim Craig surviving the first round of play. In skiing, the Big Green's domination was ended at the NCAA championships in Winter Park, Colorado, where Dartmouth lost out to Denver 541.7 to 583.01. Middlebury was a close third with 541.28 points. Japanese Olympic ace Chick Igaya led in the Alpine events with a first in the slalom and a third in the downhill. This won him the Alpine combined title and he added other points by finishing tenth in jumping. Dartmouth's weakness in the cross country and jump were decisive factors in the only team loss of the season for the Big Green skiers.

The return of the Big Green spring teams to Hanover and the bustle of activity in the Alumni Gymnasium cage are sufficient reminders that before April is much further along the formal schedules will get under way. Here's how the teams shape up at the moment:
