THE appointment of Bursar Max A. Norton '19 to the newly created position of Associate Treasurer of Dartmouth College and three other personnel changes in the business and financial offices of the College were announced last month by John F. Meek '33, Vice President and Treasurer.
Mason I. Ingram '29, now Assistant Comptroller, will succeed Mr. Norton as Bursar. Paul F. Young '43, assistant to the Treasurer, has been promoted to Assistant Treasurer of the College, and Stephen T. Welch (Middlebury '50) has been named Assistant Comptroller. Mr. Welch assumed his position on May 1; the other changes will become effective on July 1.
In his new position as Associate Treasurer, Mr. Norton will assume special responsibilities in the office of the Treasurer, particularly with respect to administration of the ever-increasing provisions of alumni and friends of the College in the form of bequests, trusts, gifts, and annuity and life income agreements. He will also devote time to special studies of various problems of the College's business organization and financial operations. He will continue to supervise employee benefits, including retirement and insurance programs, and will be available to advise and counsel faculty members and staff on financial matters involving retirement. He will continue to supervise the collection of student loans.
Mr. Norton has been with the College since 1920 and has been Bursar since 1926. For three years prior to taking that newly created post he was graduate manager of the Dartmouth College Athletic Council. In recent years he has held the title of Assistant Treasurer as well as that of Bursar.
Mr. Ingram, the new Bursar, has been Assistant Comptroller since 1950, prior to which he was Assistant Bursar for four years. Before returning to the College he was an executive with the Industrial Credit Corporation of New England with headquarters in Lowell, Mass. Mr. Ingram as Bursar will be responsible for the collection of student bills, the handling of cash transactions and housing for faculty and students. He will continue to serve as Treasurer of the Dartmouth Outing Club and to supervise veterans and College relationships with the Veterans Administration, other contracts with the government, and research contracts. Associated with Mr. Ingram will be LeRoy G. Porter '15, Assistant Bursar, who will continue to have special responsibility for student housing and to serve on the Committee on Student Residence.
Mr. Young joined the Dartmouth staff in 1951 as assistant to the Treasurer, following three years as graduate student and registrar's assistant at the University of California. He was registrar and instructor in business administration at New England College in 1947-48. As Assistant Treasurer he will continue to have general responsibilities under Mr. Meek, with particular attention to local real estate.
Mr. Welch, the new Assistant Comptroller, was formerly with the public accounting firm of Franke, Hannon and Withey in Troy, N. Y. After graduating from Middlebury in 1950 he took his M.B.A. degree at Cornell in 1953. His father, George T. Welch, is comptroller of Vassar College. His Dartmouth duties will be of a general accounting nature, under Comptroller Robert D. Funkhouser '27.
ANOTHER ADMINISTRATIVE staff appointment announced last month was that of R. Curtis McKee '50 as Assistant to the Director of Financial Aid. This past year he has been teaching English at Hanover High School.
Mr. McKee interrupted his college course to serve with the Navy from 1948 to 1952. He received his Dartmouth degree in 1954, attended New York University, and taught at Sanborn Seminary, Kingston, N. H., in 1954-55
Mr. McKee, a native o£ White Plains, N. Y., will assist Robert K. Hage '35, director of financial aid, and will begin his duties on July 1.
