Charles S. Batchelder '14, holding the Ticknor Print symbolic of his award, was honored as the Dartmouth Class Treasurer of 1956 at the dinner of class officers in Hanover on May 5. Following is the citation read to him by Charles E. Widmayer '30, editor of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE:
The Class of 1914, wise in the ways of repetition, has somehow taken possession of the adjective "famous." "We in Hanover know 1914 for venison, pheasant and strong waters, liberally dispensed at Sno-Bird parties; for reunion bagpipers; for Wah Hoo Wah turkeys and cows sporting numerajed blankets; for a huge green banner featuring a six-letter word beginning with F. We know 1914 also for its loyal support of Dartmouth; for its establishment of the memorial book plan of such value to Baker Library; for the balanced strength of its whole class program.
As 1914's class treasurer for the past seven years, you, Charles Shaw Batchelder, have been one of the big reasons for this lively, successful program. Recognizing the ALUMNI MAGAZINE as an essential line of communication with the College and with each other in the class, you have maintained your class group subscription well above quota and have worked with the Class Agent and other officers to cover all the men actively or potentially interested in Dartmouth. Your program of sending the Magazine to forty class widows is one of the largest we have in this growing plan. To meet these and other costs you have steadily raised the percentage of men paying annual class dues to this year's really outstanding record of 71% of the entire class, a figure surpassed only by a few of the older and smaller classes. You have filed a 1956 financial report showing money in the bank in volume enough to cause envy among your fellow treasurers. And this spring you have served as chairman of a Class Treasurers Association committee that has prepared a concise and helpful summary of the duties and responsibilities of the class treasurer.
For the general excellence of your financial stewardship, adding new strength to your class and thus to the College, and particularly for your achievements this past year, we express our sincere appreciation and salute you as the Dartmouth Class Treasurer of 1956.
