WITH final examinations only a week away as this is written (May 20), the Dartmouth varsity and freshman spring teams have virtually completed their schedules. The varsity baseball team has two non-league games remaining, lacrosse arid tennis have one contest each, the track team has only the IC4A meet, the golf team has already finished, and crew is the only sport carrying over into June. The freshman baseball, lacrosse, golf and tennis teams each have one contest to go.
Certainly the past five weeks have been busy ones for the spring teams with most of the games scheduled falling during these weeks. Generally speaking the games have been average, the teams have performed about as expected and the results are about average. For some reason spring sports do not seem to generate a great deal of enthusiasm among the undergraduates except for those participating. There are frequently more spectators at an intramural softball game than at a varsity baseball game, and the Tuck School bicycle races during Green Key Weekend and a bike race between two fraternities from Hanover to Northampton created a great deal more stir on campus than any of the more formal sports attractions.
It is probable that this is reflected in the players' attitude and also in the results to date. On the varsity level the baseball team has compiled an overall record of six wins against thirteen defeats including a 3-5 record in Ivy League play. The lacrosse team has four wins and six defeats, while in league play the Big Green has a 2-3 record. The varsity golf team, as it has for the past three years, boasts the best spring record with fifteen wins against only four defeats in dual competition. The tennis team has won six matches and lost five, while the track squad has won three dual meets, lost one and finished eighth in the outdoor Heptagonals. Overall varsity records to date show 34 wins and 29 defeats.
On the freshman level the baseball team has split evenly with a 4-4 record, the lacrosse team has won three and lost one; tennis has a 4-1 record; track a record of three wins in four dual meets and the golf team a 2-3 record. Freshman totals show 16 wins against 10 losses while combined totals for all teams are 50 wins against 39 losses.
Last month's report covered action by the Big Green teams through the spring vacation trips, and we pick up there and review the highlights from mid-April through the May 19 weekend.
