The Big Green track season opened early this year, with an unusually warm spring giving the squad a jump on their outdoor practice schedule. The opening meet, on Colgate's hard-surface track, saw Coach Noyes' charges turn in excellent performances to win 102-52. Key to the victory was the depth and strength of the sophomore throwing squad. George Remmer scored 11 points in the shot, hammer and discus, while DeWitt Davies joined the exclusive quartet of all-time Dartmouth 170-footers in the hammer. Frank Howard, in his first varsity outing, established himself as the second best, all-time discus thrower with a 158-foot effort. Chet Halka equalled his College record of 6-8 for the fourth time, his first outdoors. Junior Bob Lundquist, in his first varsity season, gives the squad strong support in the jumping events, with Jim Burin, Don Johnsen and Jim Lyall rapidly improving. Senior Bill Bridge placed only three-tenths of a second behind Colgate's NCAA 600-yard champion Tom Albright in the 880, as both shaved over a second off the old Dartmouth mark for the event.
Dartmouth also made a strong showing in the Boston College Relays at Chestnut Hill. Yale, which dominated the team scoring, found the warm weather and the fast track a boon to its well-balanced squad. The Indians captured the team gold medal in the discus, with winning efforts by Frank Howard, Remmer, and Davies. In the high jump, Halka, Lundquist and Tom Miller brought home a team third place. The two-mile relay team of Mark Hamilton, Dave Warner, Steve Atwood, and Bill Bridge placed third and erased the old College mark by over four seconds with a time of 7:43.2.
This spring holds a great deal of promise for the Green trackmen, who have greater depth generally than in the past. The next two meets, against Boston University and then powerful Harvard, should see the Indians continue to surprise.
