DARTMOUTH SKIWAY, the College's sparkling new $125,000 ski area at Holt's Ledge, Lyme, N. H., will be officially dedicated on Saturday, January 19, as part of the Alumni Council meetings. Unofficially, the area is already in operation, with Manager Howard P. Chivers '39 reporting, "Everyone who has tried it says it's wonderful."
Chivers advises that the four trails and the open slope area are groomed and interesting and offer a lot of variety. The 4200-foot racing trail, to the left of the liftline as you look up the hill, has been named the Worden Schuss in honor of the late Donald F. Worden '39. The openslope area, running off the Worden Schuss halfway up, is called Green Pastures and is serviced by a rope tow. The trails to the right of the lift line are, in order, the Gauntlet, the Sachem, and the Lyme Drop. These trails are serviced by a Poma Lift, accommodating up to 800 skiers an hour.
Rates on the Poma Lift are 35 cents a ride, $3.25 for a ten-ride ticket, or $3.50 for all day. A season ticket for Dartmouth Skiway is $50. DOC members get a reduction of approximately 20%.
The base lodge has been named for Robert Peter Brundage '45, killed in World War 11. This building is not expected to be completed until late February or March. A parking lot for 80 cars is near the lodge. The DOC is constructing, off the Lyme Drop trail, a cabin which is expected to be completed this winter.
Assisting Chivers in running Dartmouth Skiway is Al Merrill, assistant ski coach at Dartmouth, with a lift-line operator and Sno-cat man as crew. All trails and slopes are packed and smoothed by the Skiway's Sno-cat as soon as snow falls and the area should provide excellent skiing well into the spring months.
Future plans include additional downhill trails, a cross-country touring trail and a jumping hill. Funds for the new ski area were contributed by alumni, parents, friends and local residents in a campaign conducted by the Office of Development.
