Because of the interval between the writing of these notes and their publication, it is sometimes possible to reflect cheerfully upon the seasonal improvements to be anticipated by the time they reach you. Not so at this time of year; it is winter now and will still be winter as you read; and with all due respect for the skiers and skaters, would that it were spring.

But from his ranch near Missoula, Mont., Joel Antrim reports (via Ford Barrett) that, up to mid-January at least, it had been so mild that he hadn't had to feed his cattle more than Mother Nature provided. Ford is President of F. S. Barrett, Realtors, in Spokane. He writes further, "It could be that one or both of our sons will get to Dartmouth. One is a senior in high school, the younger a sophomore. Our oldest, Ann, is a freshman at Lake Erie College, and there are two younger girls. Children and education are foremost now....Will McLaughlin and I meet at our monthly Dartmouth luncheon. He has developed a fine business in flower seeds. Will is President of the Dartmouth Alumni of the Inland Empire (Spokane area) and his son Tom is an applicant for next year's freshman class."

Pete Blodgett and his brother, Pud '24, were hunting in the Dartmouth College Grant late last fall, and while there met Bob McKennan, similarly engaged, which seems natural enough. They joined forces and Pete reports it was the best deer hunting he ever had in his life. ... Meanwhile, Frank Wallis reports that LouKimball is very happy in his new home and business in Jacksonville. He has a 26-foot boat, goes bass fishing every morning before going to work, and wonders why he didn't think of this years ago.

A very welcome letter from Brice Disque brings news of various classmates. Al Perkins, former Managing Editor of the American Magazine (now defunct), is associated with the magazine department of Carl Byoir and Associates, a publicity firm....Dan Slawson is in thereal estate business in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

...James Guernsey, in the same line, heads the Guernsey Construction Company of Miami, Fla....Don Moore is now Eastern Story Editor for R.K.O. Pictures.

A retrospective exhibition of paintings by Wendell Jones was held from February 5 to March 5 in the Art Gallery of Vassar College, where Wen was Professor of Art at the time of his death about a year ago. Jane and the boys are now living at 430 East 86th St., New York 28.

The Alumni Dinner in Boston on February 13 found ten 25'ers gathered together, a rather smaller number than usual, but this was the season of winter holidays for many. Those present were Pete Blodgett, Dutch Clark, Johnnie Garrod, Don Hunt, Jamie Jameson, Bunny Levison, Ken Nugent, Bill Thompson, Frank Wallis and your secretary. The annual Boston area husbands and wives dinner will be held on April 26. Save the date and watch for further details.

The announcement of the 200th Anniversary Development Program, with its forthright recognition of the need for plant development, brings us up against one of the tantalizing dichotomies that seem ever to plague the race. How shall we weigh the substance and thespirit, and how bring them into harmony? Ayear ago, writing in a Newsletter from England, your secretary mentioned the notices on display in the great cathedrals urging contributions for the "preservation of the fabric." This,in essence, is the task we now face; not onlyto preserve but, in our new world tradition,to renew the fabric of Dartmouth College. Andit would be the sheerest nonsense for anyoneto suggest that we neglect the spirit by creatingfor it a worthy substance in which it may dwell.
