GEORGE W. FRIEDE '27 is a Portland, Oregon, lawyer who enjoys writing magazine articles as a hobby. In collaboration with Laureano Ramirez of Mexico City he has done research on the Mexican Indians.
A native of Portland, Mr. Friede began the practice of law there in 1932 after obtaining degrees from Dartmouth and the University of Chicago Law School. From 1942 to 1946 he served with the U. S. Army, rising from a private in the Tank Destroyers to Captain in the U. S. Government of Germany. In the latter service, he was court administrator and judge for Germans and displaced persons, and also president of the Intermediate Military Court for Wurttemberg.
Active in political life, Mr. Friede served in the Oregon legislature, 193738; was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1948; and is past president of the Jackson Club of Oregon and of the Young Democrats in Multnomah County. He formerly was Commissioner of the Public Housing Authority of Portland, a trustee of the World Affairs Council of Oregon, and president of the University of Chicago Alumni Association in Portland. Last year he was elected president of the Congregation Beth Israel of Portland.
