New Hampshire Legislators Hold Luncheon

WITH Governor Lane Dwinell '28 as chief guest, the fifth Dartmouth- Men-in-the-Legislature Luncheon was held in Concord, N. H., on January 23. Fifteen of the sixteen Dartmouth men in the New Hampshire Senate and House were joined by thirteen other alumni and two Dartmouth wives in state service. The inclusion of the ladies was an innovation for the biennial luncheon, which has grown markedly since the first one was held in 1947.

Arthur H. Chivers '02, Professor of Botany Emeritus, who represents Plainfield in the General Court, presided at the luncheon. The Rev. Telford Mook '38, chaplain of the legislature, gave the invocation; W. Douglas Scammon, Speaker of the House, spoke briefly; and Governor Dwinell addressed the group, speaking mainly about his experience as a Trustee of the College. The luncheon arrangements were made by James C. Bingha'18 of Concord.

The legislators present included State Senator Herbert W. Rainie '06 of Concord and the following State Representatives: Prof. Arthur H. Chivers '02, Plainfield; Fred A. Jones '06, Lebanon; Arthur S. Rollins '10, Alton; J. Daniel Porter '11, Lebanon; James F. Malley '11, Somers worth; Bowdoin Plumer '12, Bristol; Dr. Howard P. Sawyer '15, Brookfield; William F. Mott '16, Newington; Ralph Sanborn '17, Hampton Falls; Florimond D. Duke '18, Hanover; Roland C. Batchelder '21, Deerfield; Robert S. Monahan '29, Hanover; Thomas C. Dunnington '30, Dover; and David J. Bradley '38, Hanover. One other Dartmouth representative, F. Howard Bardol '24 of Wilton, was unable to attend.

Mrs. William S. Lord ('28), representative from Gilford, and Mrs. Kenneth W. Davis ('24), with the office of the Secretary of State, attended the luncheon; also Prof. Charles A. Holden '95, former representative from Hanover; Harold K. Davison '15 of Woodsville, chairman of the Public Utilities Commission; Percy H. Howland '17 of Pembroke, director of the Interests and Dividends Tax Division; Perne R. Hutchinson '17 of Concord, Division of Employment Security; Howard L. Steele '17 of Manchester, Department of Administration and Control; Blaylock Atherton '22 of Nashua, Public Utilities Commissioner; Andrew M. Heath '22 of Concord, advertising manager of the Planning and Development Commission; Benton Demers '30 of Concord, deputy director of the Division of Employment Security; Carroll A. Durfee '30 of Concord, lieutenant of State Police; Philip D. McInnis '36 of Concord, deputy state treasurer; Vincent R. Dahlfred '38 of Concord, assistant industrial director of the Planning and Development Commission; and Stephen Winship '41 of Hopkinton, editor and publisher of the Legislative Brown Book and the Capitol News Letter.

Besides the Dartmouth men listed above, several others are also serving in the state government. They include Gladstone Jordan '11 of Pittsfield, Division of Employment Security; Russell H. Leavitt '16 of Concord, chief of the Division of Instruction, Department of Education; Frank C. Reagan '17 of Mont Vernon, assistant director, Department of Probation; Charles M. Falconer '20 of Concord, Division of Employment Security; Sheldon T. Hare '22 of Concord, Leonard Hadley '26 of Concord and Frederick M. Auer '27 of Hopkinton, all engineers with the Department of Public Works and Highways; and Russell B. Tobey '27 of Concord, director of recreation. Mrs. Philip H. Blodgett ('15) of Concord is with the Office of the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds.
