CHARLES E. WIDMAYER '30, long deserved because of his outstanding service to Dartmouth men everywhere as Editor of the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
ANYONE who knows Charlie Widmayer .. also knows that he was out of town when this page was made up. In fact, it is only because the Editor is separated from us (temporarily) by the whole nation that his staff dares the delight of honoring him. We honor him not only because his is the best magazine of its type and because this year he has completed 25 years of service to the College, but also because of the kind of man he is. Although he is an editor's editor and always precise about what he wants for the magazine, he is understanding of his writers and gentle with his staff - and don't be fooled by that long staff list on the masthead, Charlie's light burns late half the month.
He has been at Dartmouth since 1932; first he was an assistant in the English Department, then director of the News Service and director of Athletic Publicity as well as an assistant on the MAGAZINE. Since he took over the editor's job in 1943 the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE has earned no less than nine national awards from the American Alumni Council. We say Wah Hoo Wah!
Charlie Widmayer received a mounted cover of the May issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE from Sid Hayward '26 on an evening in June whenCharlie made the shift from host to guest of honor. The MAGAZINE staff turned its annual banquet into a commemoration of the Editor's25 years of service to Dartmouth by presenting Charlie with a gift, an anniversary cake and the mounted cover which was signed by allpresent (about 40) and inscribed by President Dickey: "For Charlie Widmayer '30, Editor of the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE on his25th anniversary of service to the College. In behalf of the entire Dartmouth Fellowship, your colleagues record their admiration and appreciation for an editor who has also been a good educator to all of us in every sense. Congratulations on this and your other fine issues."Charlie's wife, Larry, is at the left and Mrs. Leonard E. Morrissey and Prof. Harry L. Bond '42 are on the right.
