Corporate Aid Grows
OCTOBER 1958

IT would seem that corporate giving programs successfully managed to weather the recession, as Dartmouth's corporate receipts for the year 1957-58 totalled $198,866, an approximate increase of $4,500 over the comparable total for the year 1956-57. This amount is exclusive of gifts made to the Alumni Fund by smaller companies and the annual grant of $10,620 to the Medical School by the National Fund for Medical Education. Though the number of companies adopting corporate programs for the first time was reduced, with very few exceptions those corporations having established programs continued and, in a few cases, increased them.

Dartmouth's share of the New England Colleges Fund continues to grow, the 1957-58 total of $21,352.62 being an increase over the previous year's figure of $18,601.05.

Unrestricted grants grew from $70,745.05 to $84,005.02, mainly with the aid of two large grants from the Westinghouse Educational Foundation and Bethlehem Steel Co. Receipts for scholarship aid, matching gifts, and endowment type programs all similarly showed an increase over the previous year. Endowment receipts, exclusive of funds included in the Capital Gifts Campaign, totaled $2,668.88. This, being 1.5% of the total, compares favorably with the 1% reported by the Council for Financial Aid to Education as the percentage contributed for endowment purposes by 72 companies surveyed in 1956. Gifts for the capital campaign and plant purposes grew from $24,391 in 1956-57 to $47,781 in 1957-58. During the current year this total should grow significantly as a special effort is to be made by the corporate gifts committee to obtain increased capital funds for the College.
