Hi, everybody, and welcome back to the '53 corner. Although we did not go to press the past few months, history continued to be made by the class as a whole and by many individuals in her ranks. As X crawl out from behind a sand dune, nestled in a warm cove of an August-bathed Cape Cod beach, I find indelibly written in the sands some talk of money, romance, birth, promotions, and honors. Let's look at each grain individually.
Money - Hanover reports that the College's 1958 Alumni Fund Campaign was a success with 14,361 contributors donating $455,300.91. Our class can be very proud of its part in making this record possible. We continue to serve well and to perpetuate a financially independent college. 578 members were credited with contributions of $6582 this year to win the Tribal Sweepstakes, as compared to 523 members and $6827 last year which won us the Little Green Derby title. Ted Spiegel and his agents did an outstanding job. Due to the fact 40 members of our class are being asked to contribute large sums to the Capital Gifts Program this year, and therefore were not solicited by Ted in the Alumni Fund Campaign, total dollars went down a bit, however the actual number of individual donations went up appreciably. We obtained 110% of our goal to lead all Dartmouth classes except the older classes of '97, '99, '04, '12, '16, '25, and '27. This record is quite a remarkable one for Ted and his agents in view of the high-water mark set by John Corcoran and his organization last year. Ted and the class can accept with pride the congratulations and thanks given by President Dickey and alumni officials for a job well done. Under the devoted leadership of Class Agents Charlie Fleet,John Corcoran, and Ted Spiegel, our class, during the first five years of its history, has excelled in this endeavor. A great many thanks are owed these men for having given us the organization and momentum of increasingly successful campaigns. It would appear that we should now be in the groove - as a class body and individually - to perpetuate this important phase of class activity with distinction in the future.

This is the story: Byron Menides '53, vacationing in St. Tropez, France, from Teheran, sat down in Senequier's sidewalk cafe and ordered a cold beer. The resort's sensational women flowed by, and so did time; a glance at his watch proved to By that he had sat there for two full hours without touching his beer or lighting his cigar. The sights of St. Tropez, according to reporter Alan Jadison '52, thus received the ultimate tribute.
