As this is written (March 7), the first duckboards are down for those disliking the first of the breaking-up of our winters. All around there are huge piles of snow; parking your car is an adventure. I have to back down into my drive and on into the garage, for too much snow makes a fishtail turn plain impossible. Coming out is also an adventure - blindman's bluff - emerging from between piles on each side and unable to see what may be there. Caution is needed.
This is a time for professional meetings of various kinds. Two Hanover doctor-classmates have returned from such. Les Sycamore was Chancellor of meetings of the American College of Radiology, in Chicago in February. Ruff Miller is a member of an ad hoc committee on credentials of medical technologists, and attended meetings of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. About the time you read this, I'll be off for the first of a new series of talks to Industrial Advertiser groups, the first in Madison, Wis.; not to mention the usual number of talks to regional PTA and similar groups.
Speaking of advertising again, Tide, a trade paper for the marketing groups, recently showed a picture of Harry Wolfe with an article on a new method he is developing for testing the relative effectiveness of printed ads. (Feb. 14th issue) It is an improvement over other methods; I hope such 1924 advertising men as Lee Ramsdell, Spud Spalding, Al Brown, etc., see it. His letter has good personal news: Harry is now remarried, as of February first, to Mrs. Gavin William Young, of Menasha, Wis. She is a friend of the family of long standing, and has a son by her first marriage. Congratulations to you both; I hope to see you here in Hanover this spring. Harry teaches at Columbia University as a visiting professor; he is the Managing Director of Behavioral Science Research, Inc., a "group formed to bridge the gap between industry and the colleges in the use of behavioral sciences in industry." Speaking from experience, I know there is a place for such good offices. For many years, Harry was with Colgate-Palmolive, as marketing research director. Come share my ivory tower one day, Harry.
Going back to Hanover, one sees the Gordie Bridges down in the Southwest corner of the hockey rink for all games; they never miss a basketball game either. Don Bartlett and I face each other around the table at meetings of the Executive Committee of the Faculty, currently just having completed our work for our respective divisions, Humanities and Social Sciences, on the new curriculum. Our Registrar-to-be, Robin Robinson, has escaped most of the big snows by his last-fling trip to Europe before he comes back to dig in on the new job. Have fun, boy; those I.B.M. machines await your command.
George Gercke died of cancer early last month. He had been very active in profesional movie work; his first child by a first marriage is on TV-movies. We are saddened by another addition to the list of those who have gone on.
