Hanover is it's usual ambivalent self this time of year. No snow in February ... but we had lots left over. We are leaving town March 5 to seek warm climes and many friends down in Florida. Word came back that the alumni meeting at Sarasota recently was heavily padded with Hanover faculty and such. We look forward to seeing many '24s ... the Ted Nilsens, Beers, Lam-sons, Stub and Doris Reed, perhaps Hank andPauline Hartshorn. There will be others, too, hopefully Mercer and Doris Bowers on lovely Hilton Head, S.C.
Shifting from that to next fall, the word is that we have added to the Bonnie Oaks arrangement for the October 13 weekend of the Penn game by a good spot for pre-game lunch in the Tavern Room of the Hanover Inn. This is by request of some who wearied of the crowded Observatory Hill with its minimum creature comforts. I'll have details in Butts Lamsoo's Newsletter after we both return from the South come April. (By the way, our hero is now in his 18th year with the Letter; I've spoken my own thanks, and he deserves yours.) Another very deserving hero is Van who has his "team" of helpers all lined up and is happy at the early contributions that are already coming in. I'll feel better, Van, to mail you my check before I relax on the beach (hopefully). He and Lou have been baby-sitting on Al's two teenage grandchildren; Al and wife are in Costa Rica on business ... and pleasure. After checking on their nice hilltop home briefly, Van and Lou will have a month in New Mexico, Arizona, and southern California.
As they go, Stan and Barbara Chittick will be returning from their sojourn in Mexico. Other returnees include Frank and Louise Harrington who "conquered Florida recently." They are in Hanover tonight at a grand Mardi Gras in Hopkins Center; you wouln't. believe it ... a
masked crowd in costumes, banks of flowers, two bands for dancing. Immense! While Kay has made a wonderful recovery, she and Spud are staying home ... Spud is "trying (?) a bit of skating, listening to a splash of psychology (the applied variety) ... and enjoying Pirandello's 'Henry IV'. ...
Jim and Emmie Reid are spending the winter in Connecticut instead of in Carefree; their thoughts are most un-carefree as Emmy's mother is gravely ill ... He is writing again, of which more anon. Fred Maguire is another familiar with the King's English; he retires from his academic work come June. Comments on the scene, here at Dartmouth and far away even to Ireland, make interesting reading.
In addition to other troubles, Bob McCollom reports he had a coronary, but after two months rest he is returning to his medical work; no time to retire, says he! They'll be with us at Bonnie Oaks for the Penn game, he and Ginny. He adds the comment several others have written to me: "We will certainly miss Charlie Wood." He will be much missed, as he now is ... we hope MaryBelle will feel she can join us.
Finally, we go back to the sunny climes, despite news reports to the contrary sometimes. Dick andDolores Morin are having fun building a "small town house here (Tucson) for future winters ... watching each adobe brick being put in place." They have seen several: Charlie French and HarryHolmlund and wives at Green Acres; MikeWatkins has recovered from a "heart attack"; EdStreeter there, also. Win Nazros, too?
