New Dorms Planned

PRELIMINARY plans for five new dormitories on the present site of Wigwam Circle, near Tuck and Thayer Schools, were disclosed last month with the granting by the Hanover precinct commissioners of a permit for their construction. The projected residence halls will house approximately 475 students and will permit an increase in College enrollment by 200 men, if the Trustees later authorize one.

The College hopes to begin construction next fall, contingent upon receiving a loan from the federal Housing and Home Finance Administration, which provided funds for the four new Choate Road dormitories recently completed. All five units would be built at the same time, according to John F. Meek '33, Vice President and Treasurer of the College.

To make room for the new dorms, five two-story, temporary apartment houses on the west side of Wigwam Circle will be razed. These buildings, erected after World War II to house married students, have forty apartments, many now unoccupied. Living quarters elsewhere will be provided for families living there.

The new housing will allow Dartmouth's undergraduate enrollment to be increased to 3,000. As of last September, there were 2,818 undergraduates registered.
