Secretary of the Year
June 1958

Russell D. Meredith '10 was the winner of the annual award for the outstanding class secretary of the year at the May 2 dinner of alumni officers in Hanover. Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, presented the award and read the following citation:

Russell Dudley Meredith '10 - Seven years ago you became secretary of the class of 1910. One indication of the high regard for you of members of this distinguished and outstanding Dartmouth class is your further election to the presidency of the class three years ago. You are also newsletter editor. Thus do you control much of the destiny of your group, and thus is merit and service recognized.

No officer of the College would dare call any class the best class in the alumni body. But "distinguished and outstanding class" is praise fully justified by 1910 which has through the years set all kinds of records in alumni activity and in life. You would rightly insist upon crediting the spectacular achievements of 1910 in the Alumni Fund to your class agent, Andrew J. Scarlett. You would say that Jesse S. Wilson, treasurer, has created the highest of all class records of circulation of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE: Total graduates subscribing to the MAGAZINE - 141, Percentage — 100%; Total non-graduate subscribers — 49, Percentage — loo%. Believe it or not, this adds up to 200% subscribers from your class! Herbert A. Wolff is your bequest chairman. It would also be in keeping with your modesty for tribute to be paid to others in the class, leaders and members, who laid strong foundations - such as Harold P. Hinman, long-time secretary of 1910.

The ALUMNI MAGAZINE this weekend displays a chart showing promptness of secretaries in submitting copy for their class columns. Ten points per month is perfect and you have a perfect score of 90 points for the past year. Regardless of all that men did in earlier years, including yourself, we are happy now to honor you fully in your own right as the best class secretary of 1958.
