To mark the 25th anniversary of its graduation from Dartmouth, the Class of 1933 at reunion last month presented the College with a magnificent class fund, unprecedented in size and kind because of its relation to the Capital Gifts Campaign.
On Saturday evening, June 14, at the class banquet, Combined Fund Chairman Donald F. D'Arcy presented President Dickey with a gift-wrapped 1933 package containing the names of some 351 class members who had made pledges and gifts totaling $307;033-33 to the Combined 1933 Memorial — Capital Gifts Fund. The cash total on hand at that date was approximately $142,000, which put 1933 in second place among all classes for the largest gift made to Dartmouth at a 25th reunion. The Class of 1930 ranks first with $152,000, but 1933 has hopes of topping this with gifts and pledge payments expected to come in before the fund deadline of June 30.
This past year, with the approval of the Class Gifts Committee and the Alumni Council, the Class of 1933 conducted a combined campaign for both the 1933 Memorial Fund and Dartmouth's Capital Gifts Campaign. By agreement, all cash in hand by June 30 will comprise the permanent Class of 1933 Memorial Fund and the balance will go to the Capital Gifts Campaign. The combined fund goal was $333,300 and it is fully expected that this will be surpassed by the time the Capital Gifts Campaign ends on June 30, 1959.
In addition to the record of gifts and pledges presented to President Dickey, Chairman D'Arcy also turned over two small money bags, each containing 33 new pennies. One sack represented the official class gift to Dartmouth and the other was a personal memento for President Dickey to mark the occasion.
In accepting the gift with deepest appreciation, the President bespoke his thanks to the many members of '33 who made the record possible and also to the women of the class who stood behind their husbands in this major effort.
Chairman D'Arcy, whose magnificent leadership of the Class Fund over the past several years, made possible much of its success, was presented with a sterling silver cigarette box engraved with the names of two dozen 1933 regional workers who carried primary responsibilities for the campaign in their respective areas across the nation.
