GILBERT R. TANIS '38, newly appointed Executive Officer of the College, assumed his Parkhurst Hall duties August 15 as principal assistant to President Dickey and as the liaison for the Treasurer's Office and the President's Office with the Board of Trustees and its committees.

Mr. Tanis, who has been special assistant to the President in the area of corporate giving, will succeed Frank Smallwood '51, who has been executive assistant to President Dickey since 1957. Mr. Smallwood will continue in his administrative post until January 1 when he becomes Assistant Professor in the Department of Government.

Mr. Tanis took his Master's degree at the Harvard Business School in 1940 and served in the Navy during World War 11. He was employed by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation and the International Paper Company before returning to Dartmouth in 1951 as Associate in the Office of Development. He became special assistant to the President in 1957.

Another administrative appointment announced over the summer was that of George P. Drowne Jr. '33 as Director of Admissions and Student Personnel at the Tuck School. His duties will include those formerly handled by Assistant Dean Harold E. Angelo, who has left to be Dean of Men at the University of Colorado. Mr. Drowne will also be an administrative assistant in the Thayer School.

Mr. Drowne, who has spent over 25 years in the field of industrial and human relations, was director of personnel for Perkins-Elmer Corporation in Norwalk, Conn., from 1956 until his Dartmouth appointment. He also served for five years as director of executive placement for the American Management Association and has held various administrative and consultative positions with national, state and local organizations. His son, Peter, is a sophomore at Dartmouth this year.
