Your new correspondent returned to Hanover from Chicago on September 1, following three weeks of discussions and planning concerned with the preparation of an Army Engineers' Polar Reference Text, to find this column now his responsibility. Ed Brown CE'35, who has so competently prepared these notes for the past two years, asked to be relieved because of the growing demands upon his time. In addition to his teaching and Thayer School committee work, Ed is active on Dartmouth and Hanover committees, and recently, with Assistant Professor Carl Long, has established the consulting firm of Brown and Long. We all thank Ed for his excellent coverage of the news in this column.

Since the last issue of these notes, the 1959-60 academic year was completed, the i960 summer session is more than half completed, and the new college year is now just ahead. It will be of interest to all to note two events prior to the summer vacation. On May 28, i960, a joint meeting of the Thayer School Board of Overseers and the Executive Committee of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers was held in Hanover to discuss trends in engineering education, Dartmouth's engineering program, and the role of the DSE in these areas. The following were present: Overseers, Provost John W. Masland, Dartmouth; J. Hartness Beardsley DC37; Dean Gordon S. Brown, M.I.T.; E.Shaw Cole CE'31; Herbert F. Darling CE'27; President Jess H. Davis, Stevens Institute. D. S. E. Executive Committee: Byron Tomlinson CE'36; Bob Barr CE'42; Bob Mcllwain TT'51; Bob Egelhoff CE'39; Fritz Geller TT'48; Gerry Sarno CE'51; HowardSchroedel CE'26; Charlie Hitchcock CE'39;Bill Kimball CE'29. Dartmouth invited participants were Deputy Provost LeonardRieser DC44 and Director of Admissions Eddie Chamberlain DC36.

The Thayer School class of i960 received their degrees on June 12 at the college commencement with the Dartmouth class of i960, thus ending an era longer than this reporter can remember. It was a pleasure to watch Dean Kimball present the graduates to President Dickey, and to see them receive their diplomas as a group, before the large commencement audience. The honors and prizes were awarded at a dinner held on June 11 in Thayer Hall, presided over by the Student Chapter of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers. The graduating class was admitted into membership in the DSE by Fritz Geller TT'48 who then awarded DSE prizes to Fred Hart EE'60 for his paper, "An Experimental Study of the Effects of a Resonant Dipole Antenna in a Single Wire Transmission Line Field," and to Neil Greene ME'60 for his paper, "An Examination of Hall's Dual Theory of Conductivity in Re- lation to the Thomson Thermoelectric Ef- fect." Professor James Browning DC'44 awarded the Goodrich Prize jointly to James Picken EE'60 and Dave Spaulding EE'60.

It is a great pleasure to report that Jim Browning DC'44 has been appointed Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Jim, who has taught at the Thayer School since 1949, will be on half-time leave during this scholastic year, and will devote this time to the affairs of his company, the Thermal Dynamics Corporation.

Additions to the Thayer School staff are Visiting Associate Professor of Engineering Science Miles Hayes, Teaching Fellow Ray Martinelli ES'61, Graduate Assistants in Research Tim Ryerson ES'61 and Joseph Cramer ES'61, and Research Assistant Louis Semprebon ES'60.

Director of Research Millett Morgan is in London to attend the XIII General Assembly of the Int. Sci. Radio Union as delegate of the U. S. National Committee. Before returning to Hanover, he will visit the Royal Danish Technical Institute in Copenhagen and the University of Naples where there are cooperating whistler stations.

In June Professor of Engineering and Management George Taylor again conducted his well-received A. S. D. Executive Program George explains that A. S. D. stands for Analysis for Spending Decisions. He was ably assisted by Martin Anderson TT'58, and Tuck School Professors Len Morrissey DC'48 and Jack Griswold.

The summer session is, at this writing well under way. For the second year it consists of a common two-part course for all entering fifth year students. Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering Albert Heckbert is the instructor for "Analog Methods of Engineering Analysis" and Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering Carl Long is in charge of "Numerical Methods of Engineering Analysis."

Several faces will be missed at the start of the fall term. Dean Kimball '29 reluctantly accepted the resignation of his secretary, Stacia Kebalka Ballou on September 2. Stacia will be remembered by the past decade of Thayer students, faculty, and visitors as the friendly and efficient mainstay in the front office. She will be sorely missed, but we bow to her growing family's higher priority. The Edward Ballous expect their third child this month.

Assistant Professor Charles Reynolds has resigned to return to M.I.T. as a full-time student and candidate for his doctorate in metallurgy. Visiting Assistant Professor Bertram Wellman has moved across the campus to the new Medical Science Building where he will be in charge of setting up and supervising a new instrumentation laboratory for the Medical School.

Teaching Fellow Bob Portland EE'60 received his M.S. degree in June, and has joined the staff of Bell Labs. Fred Hart EE'60, Graduate Assistant in Research, has accepted a position with Connecticut Light and Power Co. He has moved with his family to Hamden, Conn.

A meeting of the Thayer School Alumni will be held in Boston, Tuesday, October 11, i960 in connection with the annual convention of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Also, the annual dinner and meeting of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers will be held in New York on Wednesday, October 19. (See Civil Engineering, August i960, page 92.) Notices for each of these meetings with complete information will be sent out shortly. All alumni and friends are urged to attend at least one get-together and if possible, both.

Dean William Kimball, CE'29 (l) was honored in June at a party given by the Dartmouth Society o£ Engineers. The occasion was the fifteenth anniversary of Dean Kimball's appointment as Dean of Thayer School. He was presented a silver coffee service by Byron Tomlinson, CE'36, president of the DSE.
