San Francisco's customary Christmas-Season party, Dec. 29, at the University Club, was strongly spiced with that travel flavor seldom absent in the distinctive, and sometimes singular, social blend so characteristic of this world crossroads.
It was a mustering and a clustering of "all-the-regulars" and the "I-always-see-him-at-least-once-a-year" fellows . . . the hardy pilgrims from across-the-Bay, down-the-Peninsula, from the Hill Country, as well as the Valley of the Moon. The cosmoramic picture gained added chiaroscuro from its frame of cosmopolite servitors, the silent, swift from the far Pacific behind the mahogany, and the deft of hand and agile of foot from the schools beside the Mediterranean. Spread below the expansive view-windows atop Nob Hill was the shimmering, gleaming varicolored lights of the white city in holiday garb with its outlined-in-lights, arching Bay Bridge, the incandescent Christmas trees of Buena Yerba isle and the backdrop glow from the heights beyond Berkeley, Oakland and the glittering, bedight up-Bay villages.
Summarizing the year's work and the preview of 1960 was handily dispatched by Jim Morse '46 on enrollments, Alumni Councilor Ritchie Smith '26 on Hanover, and President Carl Ward '32 on the local social program as well as the activities of the Dartmouth Outing Club at their Brenner Pass hostel.
The evening's most conspicuous and impressive feature was the trenchant contributions of the large undergraduate delegation. Excellent and down-to-earth summaries of campus life and issues were given by seniors Tom Hannan and Tom Van Winkle, and Bill Wood '61. The undergrads included: from '61 Bill Bull, Curt Low and Pete Palin; from '63 Jim Libbey and Mack Schumke. The upcoming class of '64 was represented by Allan Tenney, Leigh Callaway and Bill Mingst.
The annual alumni dinner meeting will be Friday, April 1. Honored guest will be the beloved, recently retired, Dean MacDonald.
Plans for the Spring Dance are well underway with the locale and other details to be soon forthcoming.
