"Rudy" Joins the Dickey Family
February 1960

To mark President Dickey's 15th year in office as head of Dartmouth College, his classmates in 1929 this fall presented him with the Golden Labrador puppy shown in the adjoining picture. "Rudy" has replaced the late "Rusty," a Golden Labrador that the Dickeys had for many years, and he will be trained to take over on the duck-hunting trips to Lake Champlain that President Dickey enjoys so.

Rudy's pedigree papers were accompanied by a card from 1929 saying: "To John Sloan Dickey from his classmates in celebration of this 15th year on the job, and as further indication of their constant affection and steadfast confidence."

To Class Chairman Bill Andres '29, President Dickey replied:

"For too long now I've had in my mind wanting to put a word or two on paper to tell you and the other '29ers that your thoughtfulness in marking my anniversary on this job gave me a boost in spirit beyond anything that you let show.

"At least over half of the race is now run and, as the saying goes, that's a lot. It will be for others to say how good it has been for Dartmouth, but they have been wonderful years for the Dickeys. This is not the time for credit lines and time out for reminiscing, but I want you and my classmates to know, as I said the other day to my associates on the job here, the secret of Dartmouth's strength and joy is in their sharing.

"Well, young Rudy is doing his share of the sharing and he has quickly peeled a decade of moss off of our backs. It almost seems as if we've started all over again with a family, and I'm sure I need not tell you that that is both fun and fearful."
