JOHN BROWN COOK '29, of New Haven, Conn, has agreed to serve as chairman of Dartmouth Medical School's drive for $10,000,000 in capital funds, President Dickey announced last month. Sharing the campaign leadership with him as cochairman will be Dr. John L. Norris '25, of Rochester, N. Y., associate medical director of the Eastman Kodak Company.
About §5,000,000 of the total sought to expand teaching and research facilities has already been subscribed through major gifts from foundations and the U. S. Public Health Service. Mr. Cook, who is president of Whitney Blake Company of New Haven and of the Reliable Electric Company of Chicago, and Dr. Norris will be in charge of the remaining generalsolicitation phase of the drive.
Principal objectives of the Medical School fund campaign are construction of a new $3,000,000 Medical Sciences Building, now under way near the Hitchcock Hospital; construction of library and auditorium facilities; and increased endowment to place the School's expanded faculty on a permanent basis. The expansion and strengthening of the Medical School is being done within the framework of the School's traditional twoyear program, which is being watched with increased interest in the world of medical education, because it is now believed that the two-year school can provide an economical answer to the nation's need of more doctors. The major gifts to the capital campaign to date have been made with the belief that Dartmouth Medical School can serve as a prototype for this development in American medical education.
