Coach Eddie Jeremiah's '63 baseball club has done fairly well to date with wins over Kimball Union Academy and the University of Vermont and losses to Lyndon Teachers College, Kimball Union and Vermont. The current lineup has Mike Letis catching, Bill Courtney at first base, Mike Nyquist at second, Barry Elson at shortstop, and Jack Shure at third base. Don Wertz, Hank Parrish and Bill Lawliss are the regular outfielders, while Jim McAllister, Ernie Torres, Bill Hibbs and Bill Coulter have been the mainstays of the mound staff.
The freshman lacrosse team, coached by Karl Michael, has been having almost as much trouble as the varsity. To date it has a lone 5-4 win over Harvard, with losses to Exeter, Kimball Union Academy (2) and Deerfield. The freshmen lack both depth and talent and are not expected to provide much assistance to the varsity next spring. Captain Bruce Derry along with Jack Watts and attack men Jim Erwin, Rick Friend and Bill King are the likeliest prospects.
The freshman tennis team has a win over M.I.T. and a loss to Andover on its record to date, with matches against Harvard, Brown, Exeter and St. Paul's remaining. Dave Smoyer, Doug Floren, Carter Morey, Bill Gerstling, Jon Morrison and Dave Rosenbaum are the regular team members - ranked in that order.
The freshman track team wound up an undefeated season by downing a strong Harvard freshman team, 77-63. There are a number of good prospects, including some freshman record holders, on the current squad, which bodes well for next year. Jerry Ashworth holds a 9.9 record in the 100-yard dash and a 21.5 mark in the 220, while Tom Holzel has a 50.9 record in the 600. Hank Jenckes holds the hammer-throw record, while Chris Wieden-mayer set a new record in the 880 against Andover. Phil Wycoff and Ramon Reiser are topnotch competiters in the discus, as is Sandy Duncan in the hurdles and Jim Higgins in the 100 and a 20. Looks like Coach Ellie Noyes is bringing along another fine freshman team.
Also undefeated in current competition is the freshman golf team, coached by the old pro, Tom Keane. The golfers have posted victories over Exeter, Williams and Amherst thus far, with most of the team shooting consistently under eighty and some in the low seventies. Dick Keegan, Bill Gifford, Dave McCollum, Steve Bloom, Jim Wendell, Joe Shannon, John Lower and Steve Furman are the team members.
