Despite some early season optimism, the Dartmouth Rowing Club crews have generally shown the results of lack of practice and pre-season training by losing in most of the major races over the past month.
In the E.A.R.C. sprint championships, only two of six Dartmouth crews were able to qualify. The jayvee heavyweight and varsity lightweight boats got into the finals, but the jayvee crew finished sixth, a length behind Penn, in a race won by Cornell, while the Dartmouth lightweight boat finished last in a race won by Harvard.
In competition the previous week the varsity heavyweight crew finished last behind Harvard, Princeton and M.I.T. in the Compton Cup races, while the Big Green jayvee heavies came in third behind Harvard and Princeton.
Meanwhile, the varsity 150-pound crew was being defeated handily by the Detroit Boat Club in a home meet on the Connecticut.
During the first weekend in May the varsity oarsmen went down to defeat again at the hands of a strong Syracuse University crew, although the J.V. heavies won their second race of the season by winning over the Orangemen. The varsity lightweight crews, on the same weekend, lost the Biglin Cup to Harvard in a Hanover meet, with M.I.T. third. However, the Indian jayvee and freshman lightweight crews finished third behind both Harvard and M.I.T. in their races.
The big meet coming up, of course, is the I.R.A. Regatta at Syracuse in midJune and the Dartmouth crews are pointing for this race, although a dual meet with Wisconsin and a three-way competition with M.I.T. and Columbia comes before that.
At the spring season's half-way mark, Red Hoehn's tennis team was on its way to a winningseason. The team includes (1 to r) Larry Holden '61, Phil Meyer '62, Gordie Aydelott '62,Jack Herrick '60, Jim Biggs '62, Bill McClung '60, Ron Picket '61 and Coach Hoehn.
