Crew Coach Peter Gardner used the spring vacation to good advantage as he put together what he hopes will be a winning combination of three senior lettermen, two juniors, and a trio of sophomores.
The stroke of the varsity heavyweight crew will be Captain John McLaughlin, who led the varsity in last year's IRA races. At the number-seven oar is last year's freshman captain, Ned Northrop. The '66s posted one of the best records in recent years.
The number-six position will be filled by Bob Ernst, who rowed in same position in the JV boat in 1963. Senior Bob Brayton, a silver medal winner in the Pan American Games, is at number five. Brayton missed most of last year because of hepatitis.
Moving back in the boat we find Herb Goodrich, the third senior, at four and Bo Andersen, a junior, at number-three oar. Larry Hoppersted is two and John Boies is in the bow. The last two men are both sophomores. The cox for the heavyweight crew is John Corneveaux from Mankato, Minn.
Still an unknown quantity, the crew opened against Brown and Boston University on April 18. By mid-May, with races against Syracuse and Wisconsin as indicators, Coach Gardner will soon know how strong the 1964 varsity really is. It could be one of Dartmouth's best.
