Two more national fraternity chapters on the Dartmouth campus went local last month. On May 17, Delta Tau Delta severed its national ties and earlier in the month Sigma Nu was granted a suspended charter by its national brotherhood.

At the start of the spring term, four Dartmouth fraternities still had to take action to meet the Trustee-approved requirements of the 1954 student referendum, which condemned nationally imposed discrimination. In April, one of the four, Sigma Chi, went local and adopted the name The Tabard. Delta Tau Delta has now followed suit and adopted the name Bones Gate, after an 18th century English coaching inn; and Sigma Nu, with its suspended national charter, has also gone local and become Sigma Nu Delta. The one remaining national fraternity that has not gone local or brought about a change in its charter is Phi Gamma Delta.

The Dartmouth Trustees, who earlier had approved an April 1, 1960 deadline for carrying out the referendum vote, at their last meeting accepted a UGC recommendation that the above four fraternities be given until September 1 to work out the practical details of their compliance, especially since national conventions this summer might produce charter changes. In Sigma Nu's case, the Dartmouth chapter plans to resume national status if constitutional changes are made this summer.
