GOVERNOR Nelson A. Rockefeller '30 of New York was honored by the Dartmouth Alumni Council with an Alumni Award at a special ceremony in New York City on October 16. The presentation by Victor G. Borella '3O, vice president of the Council, was made at the Hotel Commodore club rooms of the Dartmouth College Club of New York and marked the first use of the new quarters.
Present from the College for the ceremony were President Dickey, Vice President Hicks, and Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College and secretary of the Alumni Council. John R. Vincens '39, president of the Dartmouth Club, presided, and other officers of the New York club as well as a 1930 class delegation were among the audience of 300.
The Dartmouth Alumni Award, symbolized by a small replica of the silver Wheelock Bowl, is made annually to several men who have had distinguished careers and have demonstrated devotion to the College by loyal service to its purposes. Governor Rockefeller was unable to be in Hanover to accept the award when it was voted to him earlier.
At the New York ceremony Mr. Borella read the following citation:
NELSON ALDRICH ROCKEFELLER '30
Outstanding leader in culture, commerce, international affairs, and as Governor of New York State, your brilliant achievements are a source of pride for Dartmouth men.
Graduate of Dartmouth in 1930, you achieved undergraduate distinction as a Senior Fellow, Phi Beta Kappa, and athlete. Those who knew you then will testify that you enjoyed the warm-hearted friendship and stimulating activity of our close-knit and beloved campus.
In the past thirty-two years you have combined the ingredients of intelligence, conviction, and opportunity into a full and responsive life. In your brief years you have directly served three Presidents of the United States.
You have vigorously thrown yourself into all things with high purpose and unselfish ambition.
Widely known as a devoted Dartmouth man, you have set an example for all of us through service as a Trustee of the College, through loyal activity for your class of '30, and thoughtful support of the liberal arts.
With pride and appreciation we speak for 30,000 Dartmouth men in presenting this Alumni Award to you.
The new Dartmouth Club quarters occupy the entire south mezzanine of the Hotel Commodore and will be fully in use this month.
