Professor of Mechanical Engineering JimBrowning D' 44, and Visiting Professor of Engineering Science Bob Dean of the Thayer School, in association with Dr. James J. Bailey of Hanover, and Prof. Howard Emmons of Harvard University have formed a new organization located in Lebanon and calbd Creare Incorporated. The new company is affiliated with Professor Browning's Thermal Dynamics Corporation.
The objective of Creare is principally the innovation from scientific knowledge, research, and advanced engineering techniques of new devices and processes of commercial and military importance. Current work in progress includes new metal cutting and working methods, high temperature plasmas and arcs, explosive effects, the generation and use of ultra-high velocity liquid jets, and air pollution control.
The U. S. Army's Cold Regions Research and Engineering Lab, now in Hanover, is developing plans to install a hydraulic analog computer, and a dynamic load test device for soils in the Thayer School. The availability of this research equipment, and the nearness of an exciting venture like Creare will provide stimulating opportunities for students and staff in basic and applied research.
Merle Thorpe ME'54 has resigned from Thermal Dynamics to found his own research and development company in Con- cord, N. H. Merle, Inge, and the children have made Suncook, N. H., their home. Our best wishes go to Merle and his new company. Professor Joe Ermenc has continued his scholarly writing with the publication of "The Great Lanquedoc Canal" in French Review of April 1961. Professor GeorgeTaylor has also continued his successful talks and workshops, speaking on "Meeting the Competitive Challenge Today" and "The Analysis for Spending Decisions" in a number of cities in New England.
In Hanover, Dick Hazen D'32 of Hazen & Sawyer is designing the long-awaited, and controversial, Hanover sewer collecting system and treatment plant. At the same time, Ken LeClair, formerly Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, and now Hanover Precinct Commissioner, is Resident Engineer for the construction of the Hanover Water Company's third reservoir. Hanover continues to grow at a rapid pace, and these improved and enlarged services are essential.
Some old news from the file includes the return of Bill Woodson ME'57 from the service to Colgate-Palmolive. Bill has concentrated on methods work and as overtime attended N.Y.U. Graduate School of Business Administration. Lefty Leavens TT'54 is manager of engineering for the Apple Growers Association in Oregon, and last year completed the first work simplification proj:ct in the industry. Lefty, Doris, and the two girls live in Hood River, Oregon. Joe Wattleworth CE'60 won first prize in the 1961 Student Paper Contest, Midwest Section of the Institute of Traffic Engineers, while studying at Northwesten. A picture of Leo Cunningham CE'47 appeared in the May 1961 Civil Engineering with the announcement that he is now a partner of Burns and McDonnell, Kansas City, Mo.
These notes are written prior to the an- nual D. S. E. meeting in Boston on October 10, so news of those attending must wait until December.
