Class Officers Weekend
June 1961

As sure as spring is bound to arrive in A Hanover, so are Dartmouth class officers who annually return in ever larger numbers for Class Officers Weekend. This year another all-time high was recorded as 208 officers from the classes of 1894 through 1960 were in Hanover for the weekend of May 5-6. Class chairmen, secretaries, class agents, newsletter editors, memorial fund chairmen, and reunion chairmen, accompanied by 132 wives, were guests of the College for the two-day program.

The weekend opened Friday evening with a reception at the Hanover Inn for all officers and their wives. This was followed by the annual banquet, held this year in the old Commons in College Hall. At the dinner the annual awards were made to the top class officers of the year (shown in the accompanying picture) and cups and citations were presented to the outstanding head agents of the 1960 Alumni Fund campaign. All the citations will be found with their respective class columns in this issue.

The toastmaster for the banquet was Wesley H. Beattie '33, president of Class Secretaries Association. Speakers included David H. Blake '61, chairman of Palaeopitus, who spoke on the achievements which have been made in student government, and the need for greater communication between the students and the alumni. The main speaker of the evening was President Dickey who devoted his remarks to the stepped-up academic pace and to what the undergraduate of today is like. He pointed out that the Class of 1965, entering next fall, is expected to have the highest College Board averages in the history of the College.

Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, presided at a joint meeting of all class officers Saturday morning in the 1902 Room of Baker Library. A roll call of the classes was called by J. Michael McGean '49, Associate Secretary of the College. A standing ovation was given to Philip S. Marden '94 of Lowell, Mass., chairman of his class and the senior alumnus in attendance.

Dean Seymour spoke to the group regarding the status of extracurricular life at the College today and related several humorous incidents involving undergraduates. For this issue of the MAGAZINE he has prepared an article presenting the substance of his talk to the class officers.

Following the general session, the various class officer associations held their separate annual meetings. Presiding over these meetings were: Robert N. Stevens '27, president of Class Chairmen and Presidents Association; Eliot S. Mover '45, president of the Class Agents Association; Simon J. Morand III '50, president of the Class Treasurers Association; Charles F. Bruder '28, chairman of the Alumni Council's Bequest Committee; and Daniel B. Ruggles Jr. '21, president of the Class Newsletter Editors Association. Alfred F. Bremble '56, Assistant Secretary of the College, also conducted a meeting for class reunion chairmen.

Following the morning of business, the class officers enjoyed watching Dartmouth teams in action in baseball, lacrosse and crew.
