IN recent years better than half of each Dartmouth graduating class has gone on to graduate study, and the Class of 1961 is fully expected to follow this pattern. The class has gone well beyond its predecessors, however, in the number and variety of prize fellowships its members have won, thereby setting what is believed to be a record in this field of academic achievement.
Forty-seven men of 1961, as of the present count, have been awarded these coveted scholarships, fellowships and graduate grants. Their number includes a Rhodes Scholar, three Marshall Scholars, a Fulbright Fellow, four National Science Foundation Fellows, four Woodrow Wilson Fellows, seven Reynolds Scholars, eleven holders of graduate fellowships from Dartmouth, four University Fellows, and twelve other fellows and scholars. Six of these men had double awards to choose from.
The plans of this year's graduating class have not yet been fully recorded, but they will probably approximate those of the class of 1960, as tabulated by Donald W. 'Cameron '35, director of placement. Last year 53% of the graduates went directly to graduate school; 19% into the service, with graduate study merely deferred for a good part of this group; and 14% into employment. The remaining men did not file their plans.
Following is the list of the 47 men of 1961 whose graduate study next year has been made possible by prize awards:
