The Navy's Distinguished Public Service Award was presented in January to James H. Wakelin '32 (2nd from left), Assistant Secretary for Research and Development, and Richard S. Jackson '33 (4th from left), then Assistant Secretary for Personnel and Reserve Forces. Former Secretary of the Navy William B. Franke (left) made the awards to them and to Assistant Secretary C. P. Milne and Under Secretary Fred A. Bantz, also shown. Of Wakelin he said, "His thorough understanding of the role of research in modern naval weapons has earned him the admiration and respect of Navy scientists and technicians, military and civilian, and his dedication has inspired them to great technological achievements." Of Jackson he said "His concern for and interest in the morale and achievement of all personnel in the Naval establishment was never more evident than in his coordination of the naval leadership program. The combat readiness of the Navy and Marine forces is testimony to the success of that program."
