Treasurer of the Year
June 1961

Victor Smith '17 was honored as Class Treasurer of the Year at the May meeting of Dartmouth class officers in Hanover, May 5, and on that occasion was cited as follows:

Those of us at the College who work with you on the affairs of the Class of 1917 know full well that you bring to the office of class treasurer a cooperative and conscientious spirit, a distaste for the merely routine, a remarkable ability to collect money, and, pervading all, a devotion to Class and College that gives a warm and shining quality to all that you do, and do so well.

Whatever the ingredients of the Smith formula might be - charm or sorcery, efficiency or the personal touch - the formula is good enough to be bottled and sold, because your classmates evidently love to send money to you. In the eight years that you have been class treasurer you have steadily moved ahead to higher ground. This year 73% of the entire 1917 membership paid class dues, comprising 80% of the graduates and 57% of non-graduates. All three of these figures are exceptionally high in comparison with the averages for all classes, and the extent of participation by non-graduates in your class is especially praiseworthy.

You have served as president of the Dartmouth Class Treasurers Association and of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Philadelphia, and in your home community you have successfully applied the Smith formula to campaigns for Church, Boy Scouts, Red Cross, and other projects. You are indeed the "well-rounded" class treasurer, wise and versatile in both the tangibles and intangibles of the job. For the present achievements, built upon those of seven years past, we are happy to honor you tonight as Dartmouth Class Treasurer of the Year.
