Don Hinkley, Managing Director of Procter & Gamble, Germany, flew back to Cincinnati on a surprise three-day visit to raid the home office of executive talent for his new company. The new German soap and detergent plant is now under construction and will be on stream next October. He and Lela look wonderful; love their work and their life over there. The International School which Don co-founded apparently is thriving and growing, and giving Don ample opportunity to stretch some muscles and practice do-it-yourself carpentry.
"Business Management" magazine in their October issue article dealing with the promotion of salesmen to management positions, called upon three business executives for answers. One of the three was RayZrike, president of Royal Worcester Porcelain.
Lefty Bogan is manager of Dominick & Dominick's brokerage office in Chicago. Dr.J. Whitney Brown has been elected to head the 500-member Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of General Practice. The popular Needham, Mass., physician also serves on the National Academy as chairman of the regional commission on education.
I had a nice letter from Bob Rader ad- vising that after twelve years with Allen-Sherman-Hoff Co., he jumped to the leasing business. Vice president of Universal Leasing Corp. in Philadelphia, Bob's equipped to lease you anything from a calculating machine to a complete plant. Next time you're in Philly, see what you can do to get him to lease you a Martini. Bob is also coach of an 85-lb. football team in the Bert Bell Memorial Football League. One of his two losses this season was suffered at the hands of the Strafford Eagles, ably coached by ol' Capt. Lou Young '41 whose sons are a big factor on the team. Young Ric Rader, incidentally, is the spark-plug on his old man's team. Pris Rader, who was born in Mary Hitchcock Hospital, is now a high school junior. Younger sister Cathy is a sophomore and two-year-old Martha is just content to rule the roost.
Harry Colwell III, in addition to his raft of other responsibilities, has accepted the presidency of the Intimate Concerts Association of Westchester for the coming season. Lt. Jim Elliott is now operating out of Springfield, Va. I haven't got all the election returns yet, but with Romney in I assume Bill Seidman's the new Auditor General in Michigan. Whit Wells, campaign manager for Pillsbury in N.H. took his lumps, not so much from the Democrats as from Republican Powell who was beaten in the Primary and then proceeded to split the party.
With the Ford Motor Co. since graduating from Tuck in '47, Dick Ranger has been mounting the ladder ever since. Most recently, he was named Car Promotion Manager for the Ford Division. The vacation that he and Carol took with the new Country Squire, the giant trailer, and assortment of youngsters, diapers, Beefeaters, and cameras throughout the Rockies and Black Hills apparently was fabulous. They're already organizing next year's jaunt. As a warm-up they are taking in the Princeton game.
Apparently the tempestuousness of the New Haven climate last week was too much for even the sturdiest souls. John Eaton had organized a party of 19 for the Yale game, and when the final whistle blew, found himself sitting solo in the mire. Everyone else, his date included, had fled to the warmth of the toddies and bridge tables.
The sons of three '44s (John Berry, Dave Mills, and Gus Pratt) entered the freshman class this year. In other Dartmouth activities, John Bird was given a vote of thanks by the Dartmouth Club of Pittsburgh for his outstanding service and leadership during his terms as president. Larry Coombs got over for the Cornell game. Dick Whiting has been elected a vice president of the Dartmouth Club of Washington, D.C.; Art Peabody, treasurer of the Maine Club; DickMayherry, a member of the executive committee for the Rochester Club; and Steve Tate is now on the Board of the Western Connecticut Club.
Norm Simpson is General Manager (Sec.-Treas.) of the Richards Advertising Co. in Syracuse, specialists in outdoor advertising and signs. He's also secretary of the Out- door Advertising Association of New York and Treasurer of the Rotary Club of Syra- cuse. Norm is one of those loyal '44s who just doesn't have the opportunity to meet with many classmates, and so does the next best thing. He holds off on his Alumni Fund gift'until the very end and in this way gets to hear from a number of his old friends.
John Mulliken, with Life magazine, is now down in Washington where we are rapidly building up a '44 contingent which will soon surpass the Bostonians. Rog Antaya has settled down in Towson, Md. Major Fred Hickey is currently in Colorado Springs as Systems Integration Officer of the Combat Operations Center.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
