The stork was hovering over the house when I visited Marilyn and Teeny Riggs in Oklahoma City a few weeks ago, and still only hovering when I left. The mission was successfully accomplished several days later when the third of the Riggs' sisters, Nancy, made her appearance, scaling in at six lbs. fourteen oz. Teeny left Carter Oil shortly after reunion to form his own business, an interesting and quite unique service company for oil operators. Essentially, he compiles geological data through logs or seismographic reports on all holes, new and old, that are drilled. An oil company interested in exploring a particular area can subscribe to Teeny's service and get a comprehensive picture of that locale withe reports on all the holes other oil operators may have drilled in the vicinity. Teeny has sixteen employees and a staggering library of these logs, and a great thing going for him!
When Marilyn and Teeny sent me the announcement, they also mentioned seeing a newspaper story about the new head of the Department of Surgery at Oklahoma U's Medical School - none other than Monte Duval! Monte and Carol had just moved to Oklahoma City.
In this fabulous field of black gold, I understand Malcolm Morse and the Morse Oil Co. in Dallas haven't any kicks coming. I also hear that Phil Pringle, after studying law at Texas U. and engineering some place else, thought he'd take a crack at oil, and on his first try hit a 500-barrel (per day) well in Hughes County. The Bachelor of Arts-Lawyer-Engineer is, understandably enough, in the oil investments business! John Cornell is a rancher in Prior, Okla., and his cattle are probably grazing atop of a sea of oil.
In the sport pages the other night there was an article about Frank Lane, general manager of the Cardinals, in which he appraised other general managers. When it came to the Giants, he said, "Chub Feeney of the Giants is the guy that shakes me. He tells the truth. I mean, you know how general managers operate. We bulldoze each other. You get used to it. Then along comes a guy like Feeney and he says, 'This is what I want and we'll give you this' and that ends it. You're off balance."
Lawyer Harry Davidson (the Rock) has accepted a position as administrative assistant to the general sales manager of the Todd Company (Banking Supplies) in Rochester. In his new capacity, the Rock will have broad duties and responsibilities which eventually will include the following: all housing problems; all field reporting forms; personnel work pertaining to sales; inventory control at zone level; expense voucher control and distribution; price book co-ordination; budget preparation and financial control in the field. Per sonally, I'll take oil. This sounds too much like work.
John J. O'Conner '41, was kind enough to pass along some news about Ja Densmore: "A. J. Densmore Jr. was recently appointed a Director of the National Bank of Lebanon. The news item continues to the effect thai Ja is active in the management of the Densmore Brick Co. of Lebanon and is very civic minded."
The Hanover Inn sends the class secretaries registration cards of class members who visit the hostelry, and I see that on the weekend of January 18 Phil Penberthy and Jack Riley were on board but at (figuratively) cross purposes — Phil for the Alumni Fund to advance the financial position of the school, Jack for West Point to deplete our position as a hockey factor.
I'm still very impressed with Stan Zarod's political prowess, and will keep among my souvenirs a belated article sent in by the clipping service which headlines, "Zarod Ousts Clampit from Seat in Senate; 24 Year Career of Senator Ended." It's one thing to lick a 24 year incumbent, but another to trim a handle like Clampit in New England.
Ever faithful, Bob Colwell sent me a remarkable piece of news from the New Haven Register. It seems that the shock of Sherm Davis' departure from the ranks of the soloists was too much for Fred Page...ergo, Fred and Elinor Emanuelson of NYC decided to give New Year's Eve good cause for celebration, and announced their engagement. Bob also pointed out that his cousin, Ted (H.E. Colwell 3rd) is now the proud papa of H. E. C. the 4th! Bob then inquires, "A sign of the passing years? I have just been appointed secretary of the Board of Directors of The Home for The Aged in New Rochelle!"
Don Hinkley brushed through town recently on another of his international junkets and announced that he and the family would leave Paris for an assignment with Procter and Gamble's British operations, the Thomas Hedley & Co., Ltd. in Newcastle where he'll be responsible for their advertising.
Dick Berlin is up in Buffalo with the Aetna Casualty and Surety Co., and Rev. JohnBrown is also in the general upstate New York area at Geneva. Tom Price is with the U. S. Veterans Administration working out of a San Francisco APO number. Down in Washington, John Craighead is a Naval Medical Officer with the Office of Surgeon General. And the doctors - Dr. Marsh Tenney is up in Hanover; Dr. Jerry Yudkin has moved to St. Paul; Dr. Jim Deakins is working out of Bridgeport; and Dr. Harry Morse has recently opened an office for ear, nose and throat in West Hartford.
When we were speaking about oil a bit back, I should have mentioned that George Troxell is vice-president and manager of the An-Son Gulf Drilling Co. in New Orleans. Almost as good as oil is the construction business in Florida, and Dyer Talley is doing OK as manager of the Gregory Lumber Co. specializing in building materials.
On Christmas eve Dick Kerwin and Dr. (or do you say "Miss") Mary Anderson of Lincoln, Neb., announced their engagement. Dick is with Wyeth Labs in West Chester, Pa. And ...a few weeks later, Bob Tompa and Rita Gaidiero of Spring Lake, N. J., made their announcement. Bob is an instructor at Monmouth College and is working for his doctorate at Rutgers. Then the next day Ralph Antonides followed suit when he and Florence Lamont of New York made known their plans for a March wedding. Ralph is an architectural designer. Best wishes to all.
Joe Vancisin '44 (second from left), head basketball coach at Yale, was on his way from Minneapolis to New Haven when this picture was taken some months ago, needless to say. With him, on the Dayton links, are (l to r) Tom Gillaugh '46, Coach Tom Blackburn of the University of Dayton and Wayne H. Morse, local friend.
