Assenting to a proposal from Palaeopitus, the Great Issues Course steering committee last month announced that it would drop the monitoring of attendance of seniors at the Monday night lectures and Tuesday morning question periods, and would make G. I. attendance a matter of personal responsibility. The committee was willing to do this, it said, in an effort to be "consistent with the principle of independence in learning which is being increasingly reflected in the academic life of the College." However ... the committee warned that it would reconsider its decision if the liberalization of rules led to any abuse of the freedom given to the senior class. Palaeopitus predicted consistently high attendance and made its request on that confident note.
