Breaking all records, the 1952 Alumni Fund went well beyond its goal with a grand total of $611,531. This annual gift to the College exceeds that of all previous Fund drives, topping the high 1951 figure of $577,263 by $34,268. Class agents, regional chairmen and the parents committee, working under the direction of Fund Chairman Kenneth M. Henderson '16, reached 16,146 contributors among the alumni, parents and friends, for a gain of 729 and a new high mark.
Alumni contributions of $534,591 exceeded the 1952 goal of $500,000. Memorial Fund income brought in $32,820 of the total amount, while 644 parents contributed $44,120. With this new record, last year's gains have been consolidated and the Fund firmly grounded at a higher level than ever before.
The greater part of the Fund proceeds were applied against the College's 1951-52 operating expenses. At the suggestion of the Alumni Council, the Trustees are using $30,000 of the surplus to endow an Alumni Fund Scholarship and are adding $45,000 to the Alumni Fund Scholarship Reserve, which was established last year with the 1951 Fund surplus of $75,000.
Parent contributors to the Fund numbered 644, or 285 more than last year, and accounted for 7 Per cent of the Fund total. The gain in alumni contributors of 444 is almost entirely accounted for by the 434 contributors of the Class of 1951. Over-all alumni participation this year was 65 per cent, maintaining Dartmouth's superiority over all other colleges in this respect. The Class of 1923 under Class Agent Leon H. Young led in dollar production, with $20,791, the largest tion any class has ever achieved. Under the agentship of Marvin L. Frederick, the Class of 1915, with a total of $20,153 was the only other class to exceed $20,000, although eight other classes went above $14,000 and 22 classes exceeded $10,000. In all, 39 of the 60 classes bettered their 1951 totals.
The average gift was up 44 cents, to $37.88; the average alumni gift of $34.49 was a slight drop from $34.69 last year.
