Since the volume of these columns is limited, it is necessary at times to hold back on some information, and such is the case with the news contained with three dues payments sent in to Johnny Benson. The "bit" from Dutch Holland goes way back to September 23, 1961 and doesn't tell too much about him, but at least proves that he's kickin' around New York as usual. We used to hear a lot about Dutch, but the line of communication seems to have closed. Why don't you start it up again, Dutch, and send Beany or me some stories about the "Big City" classmates?

The next "bit" from Luke Watson, Box 296, Somerville, S. C., goes back to October 6, 1961. Our Class is scattered all over this country, but we certainly don't do well in some parts of the South, as his note points out. "Not many Dartmouth men in my vicinity (in and about Charleston) as far as I can determine, and even fewer '31ers. Am now a somewhat erratic correspondent of Maury Whittinghill who is in Chapel Hill, N. C. He tells me there is another '31er in Georgia, and that we are "it" in this tri-state area." Just for the fun of it, I looked through the records and found that Bill Marsh is listed at Room 104, 3131 Piedmont Road, N.E., Atlanta 5, Ga., so he is probably the other '31er - and please note Bill's street number, 3131 no less - wonder if he picked the location deliberately?

The third "bit" comes from Ed Gruen in Washington and is dated October 9, 1961. Ed says he was in Boston when his daughter entered Radcliffe, class of '65, and comments "doesn't that bring the gray out above the ears, and for about two inches in my case, of course!" He was "best man last July 8 for that long-time bachelor, Ed Mecutchen" and he "saw Charlie Prouty in New Haven for an impromptu graduate bull session on Shakespeare and the theater! (surprised to find that I hadn't forgotten all of my old English honors)." Because my memory had skipped a cog regarding the name Prouty I looked up the classbook write-up which clearly explains why Charlie would have attended such an intellectual session. "This '31er has a wonderful array of alphabet hitchhiked to his name. A.B. from Dartmouth. Then B.A. (Cambridge University, 1933), M.A. and Ph.D. (Columbia 1936) and an extra honorary M.A. from Yale in recent years. Professor Charles teaches English at Yale. Perhaps you saw him in a workshop treatment on the Omnibus program a couple of seasons back."

While looking up this information about Charlie, which is on page 138 of the classbook, I read the write-ups of the other "P's" on the page, and right after Prouty comes Robert H. Powell. This connection rang a bell in my old noggin, and I scrambled through my files and came up with this news release about Bob. "Research Chemist Joins Mackay Staff." The release is from the Mackay School of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno, Nev. Bob had been analytical chemist with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. "Most recently he spent two years as research chemist at the Applied Research Institute of Burma in Rangoon. The new Mackay chemist received his undergraduate training in chemistry, geology and mineralogy at Dartmouth College. Postgraduate work at the University of Tennessee and at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory included studies in advanced inorganic chemistry, radiochemistry, nuclear chemistry and nuclear technology." The release continues with an explanation (all over my head) of the type of work Bob does and lists his many accomplishments in his field and then summarizes by stating "Mr. Powell's experience in the analytical chemistry of inorganic substances will enable the Laboratory to expand its present research and give broader service to prospectors with difficult analytical problems." If you want to contact this interesting fellow, his new address is - 730 Brookfield Drive, Reno.

So far, this column has been most interesting to prepare because since I have been doing the job there is more news on fellows I didn't know very well or regarding whom little information has been available since graduation. Since it is pretty easy for me to keep up on and get news about those of us in the Northeast, including New York and New Jersey, it is quite relieving and intere sting to be able to write for a change about some of you elsewhere in the country. Hope more news keeps coming in from those areas - it would be fun to hear from you.

In my "build-up" file I had a release about Hank Richmond to the effect that he rates highly in his town of Nyack, N. Y., in general and that recently he had been appointed to a two-year term as trustee of the Nyack Hospital. In yesterday's mail along came additional news from Bill Wilson (C.I.T. Financial Corp., 650 Madison Ave., N. Y. 22) regarding Hank, advising that "he just has had a kidney removed and will be out of the picture for the remainder of the year. I talked to him a few minutes ago, and he is feeling fine, two weeks after the operation and is planning a trip to Venice with his wife to recuperate."

Tower Snow was caught in the act "of trying to capture some Eastern dough at the Fort Hill Club" (a nice eating place in the heart of Boston) by Johnny Benson recently. Since "Towdy" is a transplanted New Englander now settled in Arizona I consider it more of a dirty trick that he didn't get in touch with me than I would have if one of you Westerners came in and didn't do so - so Towdy consider yourself scolded properly and next time be sure to at least call me at Boston Gas Company, Hubbard 2 7600, ext. 202. If anyone else coming into town would do likewise, I'd certainly appreciate it as well. lust tell my secretary, Miss Dyer, who you are, and I guarantee she'll get me out of any meeting immediately.

Received a delicious letter from NickNickum way-out in Seattle telling us that he has Jack Ewing beaten in the grandchildren derby. On lanuary 15 his fifth arrived! The ages are: three and one-half years, two and one-half years, two years, one and one-half years and one day - boy what a production line. "The sex distribution is prejudicial to men's colleges as there are four girls and one boy." He says he can also lay claim to matching my three grandchildren from one child (my son Shep). Nick says he's not in any race to get the most grandchildren, but since he has five children he feels Jack is: going to have to look to his laurels in the future. Nick's letter is so full of news about himself and others that it will be mailed to Beany right away so that he can do full justice to it in the Newsletter which I cannot do here due to space limitations. Thanks very much Nick, for your consideration.

A letter from Love's Cove via the Love's Cove "Crier" announcing the birth of Charles David Winslow. Happy parents are Marge and Peanuts. The announcement is so cleverly done that I won't spoil it by trying to do a piecemeal job on it - Beany can give it proper attention so I'll mail it to him with the hope that he will give it all to you in his next Newsletter. The baby was born December 19 at Boothbay Harbor, Me. A note on the bottom of the "specification sheet" by Peanuts is worth recording for our Class history, if for nothing else, and is "and they said it couldn't be done at 52." I'd like to know whoever said that about you, Peanuts, because so far as most of us are concerned I'm sure we honestly believe you have no limitations in any respect! Congratulations Mom and Pop Winslow. The return address on the envelope for those of you who want to write to "Pop" is, Who Me? Co-pilot Love's Cove, Southport, Me. You want to know somethin'- everybody up there knows Peanuts, so if you use that address it's guaranteed to get to him, so just for the Hell of it let's all write him and address the envelopes accordingly. When you get some letters so addressed, Peanuts, please drop me a note as to the results. Hope you get a flock of them and that all's going well with Mom and the Babe.
