A word more, as promised, about JohnAsh. During his long life he and some of his loyal family repeatedly joined us for Hanover reunions. John came to the 15th alone, made the top speech on College Friendships at the dinner with its climactic, "When I came I expected to find a few of my friends and I found all my friends." Daughters Ruth and Mabel came alone to the 25th, having earned their entire expense by part-time jobs for a whole year. To the 35th John brought his wife Mabel, also John Jr., Alice, and Martha in a sturdy Hudson plus trailer through the northern fringe of the dust storms of that era. No trip East for the Fiftieth because of the death of John's wife, but he was back at the 55th with daughter Alice and her husband Roy Smith. And only increasing deafness and arthritis kept him from the Sixtieth. A proud record!
On July 18, 1912 Albert Warren Boston and Nina Elizabeth Dutton were married in Athens, Me. So Bert and Nina have their Golden Wedding anniversary three days before our Round-Up on the 21st. Heartiest congratulations from everybody in the Class. Their grandson, Ora Harville, recently entered the Army. Hawley Chase has spent some of his winter time in Miami, incidentally enjoying some of the hotel swimming pools. But he's back north for his eighty-fifth birthday on June 12. See you on July 21, Hawley! News flash! There's to be another Charlie H. Donahue at Dartmouth. Our Donny's son Jack '35 is father of this new Donny, and the latter has just been accepted as a member of the Class of 1966.
One of the oddest coincidences in '99's family life began when Clarence and LenaJoy's grandson Bill Plumb and his wife Nancy met another Cornell couple at a wedding reception. The foursome found themselves congenial and the second couple invited Bill and Nancy to dine with them at the home of the girl's parents on Long Island. The girl's grandmother was there also, Mary (Mrs. Edward) Nye! Thus some surprise all round to find that the Cornell party was actually a Dartmouth party too, with two grandfathers of the young people proving to be '99 classmates.
Ninety-Nine readers, please take note: In this month's Class of 1932 column is an interesting account of Bill Kendall's (son of Warren and Helen Kendall) part in the April celebration in Chattanooga of a dramatic incident of the Civil War, just 100 years ago. Peddy Miller's third great-grandchild was born April 16 in Cambridge, Mass., Annette Elizabeth Rockwell. The mother is Elizabeth ("Buzzie") Rockwell, wife of Paul Standish Rockwell, photography expert. Buzzie's sister, Petra Lopes, will remain another year in Augsburg, Germany where she and her husband are both teaching the children of American service men. Buzzie's and Petra's mother is Gustova Brown, Peddy's daughter.
Our May newsletter mentioned '99's 62nd annual Round-Up: Highway Hotel, Concord, N. H., Saturday, July 21; social hour at noon, Oak Room, first floor, with luncheon next door in Rumford Room at 1:00; two dollars pays in full. The hotel is on a wide parking area just below the main city. From the older, white, three-story building at the office entrance there radiate several modern motel wings. The location is at the junction of Routes 9, 202 and 4 with the Everett Turnpike.
