The death of our classmate Rodney Sanborn on August 25, 1968 recalls to mind his wife, Margaret Nancy Lawley Sanborn, a most remarkable lady. Margaret was born in Richmond, Va., and her father was a captain in the Federal Army during the Civil War. She was educated at St. Mary's Convent and later attended art school which doubtless gave her the background for activities and hobbies pursued later in her life. Margaret and Rodney were married in Lynn, Mass., in July 1905.

During World War I she devoted a great deal of time to Red Cross work and was associated with nationally known personages such as Teddy Roosevelt and Mrs. August Belmont. Just when she began her collection of Americana I do not know but her restored home, "Stonywall," in Ossipee, N. H., as well as her New York apartment at Jackson Heights and winter home at Miami Shores, Fla., were all filled with authentic and beautiful examples of Early American furniture, historic mementos, and primitive portraits. She personally planned the reconstruction of the 17th century home in Ossipee.

When she died in November 1959 she was buried in the officers' section of Arlington National Cemetery in Washington. This honor was possible because of Rodney's service in the Army Medical Corps in World War I.
