DARTMOUTH class officers in record numbers - 278 presidents, secretaries, treasurers, head agents, newsletter editors, bequest chairmen, class gifts chairmen, and reunion chairmen, accompanied by 150 wives - returned to Hanover on May 4 and 5 to be guests of the College for the annual Class Officers Weekend. Pleasant weather, a full schedule of work sessions, and several social occasions added up to a busy and successful weekend to match the record turnout.
Following Friday's opening reception and dinner, a meeting for all groups was held in 105 Dartmouth Hall, with Thomas H. Gillaugh '46, president of the Secretaries Association, presiding. The traditional class officer awards for the year were presented (see the 1914, 1925, 1933, and 1937 class columns in this issue), and a panel discussion of recent Dartmouth developments was then led by Provost John W. Masland, with Prof. Roy P. Forster and Deans Arthur Jensen, Myron Tribus, and Charles F. Dey '52 participating.
Saturday morning's program called for seven separate sessions of the officer groups. Presiding officers for these meetings were: Wilbur W. Bullen '22, president of the Class Chairmen and Presidents Association, with which the Secretaries Association held a joint meeting; Charles F. Bruder '28, Alumni Council representative of the bequest chairmen; Donald F. D'Arcy '33, chairman of the Alumni Council Class Gifts Committee; Fletcher Clark Jr. '12, president of the Class Treasurers Association; Samuel A. Lamson '24, president of the Class Newsletter Editors Association; and Lawrence W. Scammon '27, president of the Class Agents Association. The reunion chairmen for 1962 and 1963 class reunions met informally.
Hopkins Center tours and athletic events filled Saturday's afternoon program, and that evening all hands assembled in Thayer Hall for the annual banquet, presided over by Mr. Bullen. The presentation of Alumni Awards (see below) was followed by talks by Peter T. Knight '62, who described foreign study opportunities, and Prof. Henry L. Terrie Jr. of the English Department, who spoke in light vein of modern-day student vocabulary.
A Dartmouth Players' production of The Fantasticks and an informal gathering at the Hanover Inn rounded out the evening and the weekend.

Alumni Awards
As a special event at Saturday night's banquet for all class officers and their wives, Ellwood H. Fisher '21, president of the Alumni Council, presented Dartmouth Alumni Awards to Fletcher A. Hatch '05 and Jack Childs '09. Both received small replicas of the silver Wheelock Bowl and framed citations, which read as follows:
FLETCHER AMES HATCH '05
"Though 'round the girdled earth they roam, her spell on them remains ... For Fletcher Hatch, graduate of the Class of 1905, these lines from Men of Dartmouth have a very real significance. Shortly after leaving the College, you put in a cold winter in New York as a construction engineer. By 1906 you had decided to head for warmer climes, and the next six years found you engineering in the Philippines. In 1912 the United Fruit Company was looking for engineers to go to South and Central America. When you accepted their offer, there began a happy and successful association that lasted through your retirement in 1948. You served that company in the tropics in various supervisory capacities until returning to this country in 1936. But in 30 years of skirting America, Dartmouth always retained your loyalty, later to become a major interest.
From 1936 until your retirement in 1948, you were assistant vice president of the United Fruit Company. During that period you lived in the Boston area and immersed yourself in Dartmouth and community affairs. You have been Alumni Fund Agent and Newsletter Editor for the Class of 1905 for many years. In the fast-growing community of Natick, Mass., you have been an elder statesman involved in countless projects. At one point, you were instrumental in a school building program that saw five different million-dollar schools come into being in six years.
with pride we honor your career, your Dartmouth and your community service, with this Dartmouth Alumni Award.
JOHN ROLAND CHILDS '09
You, sir, are an alumnus extraordinary. The name Jack Childs '09 is a Dartmouth tradition. Perhaps no one has ever done so much with the medium of the newsletter as you have. The 1909 Dartmouth Biddings, a year 'round commentary, is noted for its sage comments and readable style. Your readers relish the wealth of Americana they find in your bons mots - wisdom and witticisms that speak of your love for all men. Your efforts have been a major factor in stimulating strong bonds between your classmates and the College.
The greater part of your life has been devoted to the editorial and printing fields, although for a time you were also in lumber and investment activities. Since 1952 you have worked with the Cleveland firm of Horn and Norris, Inc., running their printing and editorial services division. In your home in Aurora, Ohio - affectionately known as "The Garden Spot of America" - you have been actively involved in church, political and historical associations.
Your love of music and "strumming on the old banjo" has continued since your college days, and adds zest to the fellowship of your class reunions.
In other Dartmouth affairs, you have long served as Class Notes Editor for 1909 and held all the local alumni offices, including the presidency, of the Chicago Alumni Association. Cleveland, however, now claims you as their own, Mr. Dartmouth Alumnus, raconteur, writer, and entertainer.
It is a pleasure to present to you the Dartmouth Alumni Award.
