In case the name change has slipped by unnoticed, may I mention that on March 16, 1962 the Club constitution was amended, and the Dartmouth Club of Cleveland became officially the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Cleveland.
An earth-shaking and record-breaking event on a par with Roger Maris' 61 home runs, the 16-foot pole vault, and John Glenn's journey into orbit, took place here on Friday night, April 13. The Cleveland Association's Annual Dinner Meeting was held at the University Club on a co-ed basis. For the first time in this organization's history the wives were invited to the Annual Dinner Meeting. Judging by the absence of any picketing or acts of violence, the idea was well received by the hundred or so in attendance. Because of the date, the motif for the evening was that of "Superstition," and chairman Robert Wottrich '40 had the dining room appropriately decorated. A lively cocktail hour (or two) preceded the dinner at which the incomparable Professor Al Foley '20 was guest speaker. He enthralled and thoroughly amused his audience with his Vermont humor and serious comments on the changing times in today's colleges and universities. This was a talk enjoyed by both alumnus and wife — we were very pleased that Professor Foley could join us at this inaugural event.
Ellwood Fisher '21 was presented an award from the Association for his outstanding contributions to the College as President of the Alumni Council. Other less distinguished awards were presented to other less distinguished alumni, and the wives received some beautiful door prizes. The gala evening was concluded with the election of officers for the year 1962-63 and they are: President Raymond M. Barker Jr. '52; First Vice President Waldemar Meckes Jr. '42; Second Vice President Andrew P. Carstensen '45; Secretary John C. Klein '52; Treasurer Edward Oberndorf '52.
On Thursday evening, April 26, the Association was host at a dinner for 27 of the 35 accepted applicants from this area to the class of 1966. Robert Jones '29, chairman of the local interviewing committee, was also chairman of this event at which Jack Musick, Assistant Football Coach at Dartmouth, was guest speaker. Mr. Musick spoke very little about football as he painted a picture of Dartmouth life for these boys, some of whom were still trying to decide whether or not Dartmouth was the college for them. This dinner is held annually to give the accepted applicants an opportunity to meet one another, as well as to give them a chance to ask further questions about Dartmouth from local alumni.
