When Coach Pete Gardner stated early in April that his 1962 heavyweight crew would break into the win column this spring he knew what he was talking about. Already the Indian oarsmen have put together a respectable record of two wins, one loss, and one second in a five-team race. The 1961 crew had failed to win a race.
The Indians opened their season with a big victory over Boston University on the Connecticut River course. On April 28, mighty Syracuse outrowed the Green, but the Indians were willing to chalk it up to experience. The following week the Indians returned to win the Atalanta Cup, beating both Brown and B.U. This was a squeaker as the Dartmouth margin was only a matter of a few feet.
On May 12 on the Charles River the Indians encountered Wisconsin, M.I.T., Brown, and B.U. It was an exciting race all the way, with the Green taking a momentary lead near the end only to see M.I.T. win by half a length.
The heavyweight and 150-pound oarsmen all move on to the Eastern Sprints at Worcester on May 19. The Indian heavies will be meeting Harvard, Cornell, M.I.T., Rutgers and Wisconsin in the trial heat.
The lightweight oarsmen are still looking for their first victory. Thus far they have been sunk by Yale, Harvard, Andover, and Cornell. Only the Eastern Sprints remain on the schedule.
