The Dartmouth hockey team lost four out of its last five games, two of them in overtime. The best was saved for last, however, as the Indians edged Cornell 4-3 in an overtime contest. For the season, the Green sextet stood eight wins against twelve losses and was 2-8 in the Ivy League.

A lot of factors may have been responsible for the last-place finish, but none more important than injuries, which prevented the team from being completely healthy except for five games. The Indians did not have enough depth to overcome this loss of manpower.

On the brighter side of an otherwise bleak season, Dave Leighton joined the Century Club with 65 goals and 39 assists during his three-year varsity career. He is ranked tenth among all-time Green scorers.

Captain Jack Phelan was tied for second in the Ivy League scoring race with 17 points. Over three years, Phelan had 33 goals and 55 assists as a Dartmouth player.

The season's finale at Davis Hockey Rink was a real cliff-hanger. The Indians led at the end of the first period 2-1, but trailed at the end of the second 3-2. They knotted the score at 3-3 midway through the final period as Chuck Zeh and Bob Tucker teamed up on the tally.

Cornell's goalie Laing Kennedy was bombarded, but did not crack as the game went into sudden-death overtime. At 8:57, however, Dave Leighton fired one from the right side of the cage which was too tough for Kennedy to handle. The Big Red goalie made 54 saves in one of the finest goal-tending jobs seen here in recent years.

Looking ahead to next winter, three members of this year's first team, all sophomores, will return: goalie Terry Guiney, who had 369 saves in 15 games; Chip Hayes, first-line center, and Chuck Zeh, a rugged defenseman.
