DRYFOOS MEMORIAL
OCTOBER 1963

An Orvil Dryfoos Professorship of Public Affairs has been endowed by New York Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller '3O as a memorial to Orvil E. Dryfoos '34, Publisher and President of The New York Times and a Trustee of the College at his death at age 50 on May 25.

The Professorship, described by Governor Rockefeller as "a fitting recognition of Orvil Dryfoos' leadership in civic and cultural activities, and of the constructive guidance he exercised upon governmental and community policies," will be established so that from time to time the Trustees may assign it and the funds in support of its work to those areas of the educational program concerned with public affairs. This may be within or outside an academic department. Assignment will be made where the Professorship can most effectively contribute to the over-all aims of the College in liberal learning.

President Dickey, in announcing the gift, stated that the new Professorship "will give immediate and enduring strength to that area of Dartmouth's academic program to which Orvil Dryfoos both as the Publisher of The New York Times and as a Dartmouth Trustee was abidingly committed. It is a most meaningful and appropriate memorial to a man who treated great private opportunity as a public trust."

The President said it is anticipated that the Professorship and its support will presently be assigned to the Public Affairs Center which has charge of the Great Issues Course. Both Mr. Dryfoos and Governor Rockefeller personally participated in the course and as Trustees took an active interest in development of the course and the Public Affairs Center.
