Eddie DeCourcey, a quiet, optimistic, little man who administered to Dartmouth athletes as a trainer for 48 years, died in Boston City Hospital on October 16, at the age of 81. He had retired on October 1.
Eddie came to Hanover to work for Harry Hillman, track coach and trainer, upon the recommendation of George V. Brown. He had been a marathoner and trainer for the Boston Athletic Association, competing in the B.A.A. Marathon as far back as 1903.
Although DeCourcey concentrated on the cross-country and track squads in recent years, he spent decades as the only fulltime trainer handling all sports. He also served on the 1932 U. S. Olympics training staff.
DeCourcey was known in Hanover as "the walking man." Even in recent years he thought nothing of walking to White River Junction for lunch and back.
