The first term is well on its way and the students have settled into the difficult but challenging and interesting routine that seems to make the days speed by. Some of the deep dark circles are now disappearing from under their eyes and occasionally you see a smile as they hurry by. The first term is the hardest, particularly for the first-year students, but they all seem to be surviving. I'm sure that you all remember the experience.

This has also been a busy time for faculty and administration. We launched the Tuck Associates Program on October 23 with a meeting of the advisory committee. This promises to be a very interesting and worthwhile program for all concerned. Space does not permit a description of the background and plans for the program but you will be hearing more about it in the near future.

Several guest lecturers have added interesting variety to the normal program. Edward Lamb D'24, chairman of the board of Lamb Enterprises, Inc., Seiberling Rubber Company and many other organizations, appeared before the first and second year classes on October 12. In addition to many topics of current interest, he discussed the emergence of the profession of scientific management in the Soviet Union.

Dr. Arthur R. Upgren, Dean of the Tuck School from 1953 to 1957, addressed both classes on October 15 on the subject "On Understanding Profits."

Gerard Swope D'29, International Counsel of General Electric Company, and Lawrence Wood, vice president and general counsel of General Electric, were here on October 19 and 20, and Ted Dudley, director of the AFL-CIO speakers bureau, met with the students on October 20.

Earlier in October, John Adler T'49, vice president of Audits & Surveys Company, Inc., spoke to the second-year marketing class on "The Marketing Research Agency."

The first Clearing House-sponsored career panel was held on October 27 when the following Tuck alumni spoke to the entire student body: Silas M. Ford T'61 product manager of Colgate-Palmolive Company; John W. Peterson T'54, industrial marketing, Norton Company; and ThomasH. Schwarz T'58, account executive, Compton Advertising, Inc. These career panels are very helpful and informative and are well received by the students.

Many members of the faculty have also been busy. Mr. Griswold was a discussion leader of a workshop on current credit problems conducted by the National Association of Credit Managers early in October. ... Mr. Guest was a conference leader on "Problems of Organization" for the Bureau of Industrial Relations at the University of Michigan in late October and a speaker at an executive development conference sponsored by the Department of the Army in Washington, D. C. early in November.

On October 13 Mr. Quinn spoke before a joint national meeting of the Industrial Research Institute and Chemical Commercial Development Directors Association. His subject was "The Impact of National Planning in European Countries on Entrepreneurial Opportunities." He has also accepted a special consulting relationship with the Elliott Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, officially called the Select Committee on Government Research. He is an adviser for the science policy section of the committee report.

Mr. Moss spoke to a session of the New England Hospital Assembly in Boston on the topic: "Budgeting and the Policy Process." ... Mr. Mayer's article "The Interviewer and His Environment" appears in the November issue of the Journal of Marketing Research.
