WINTER PROSPECTS
DECEMBER 1964 ERNIE ROBERTS

Since the arrival of the three-term academic system, Dartmouth's winter sports schedule is interrupted in December by a final-exam break and the Christmas vacation.

There will be only a scattering of events before that break but the winter teams have been working hard for a month to prepare for them. Here are comments on the basketball and hockey teams by coaches Doggie Julian and Eddie Jeremiah.

JULIAN: "This will be predominantly a sophomore-studded basketball squad. We'll have twice as many sophomores as any other class with eight or ten players moving up from last year's good freshman team.

"We do expect to have more height, better speed, and better shooting to off-set our lack of experience.

"Our holdover strength is in Captain Vic Mair (East Canton, O.), who has been moved from guard to forward, and backcourt men Neil Castaldo (Cranford, N. J.), Barry Machado (Fall River, Mass.) and Rick Mahoney (Pearl River, N. Y.). Senior Dave Blaine (Gary, Ind.) is a two-year letterman forward who always has averaged in double figures.

"From the rookies I expect strong rebounding from former freshman captain Gunnar Malm (Naperville, Ill.) and Jack Lockhart (Connersville, Ind.), both about 6-7. Lyndon Waugh (Huntington, W. Va.), Pete Dunlop (Westwood, N. J.) and Tom Tindall (Wayne, N. J.) can score and have fair height. Fighting for backcourt jobs will be Dave Benedict (Big Flats, N. Y.), Bill Engster (North Haven, Ct.) and Steve Shaffer (Villanova, Pa.)."

JEREMIAH: "We lost two fine seniors from last year's Ivy Hockey League champions in Captain John Carpenter and his linemate John Fiske. However, we have 13 lettermen plus two promising sophomores in goalie Warren Cook (Williamstown, Mass.) and forward Bill Smoyer (Princeton, N. J.).

"With the individuals on this squad, I assure you that this will again be a gutsy, hustling, crowd-pleasing team. I think we've got the best quartet of defense-men in the East in Charley Stuart (Princeton, N. J.), Chuck Zeh (Duluth, Minn.), Craig Rockwell (Edina, Minn.) and Jay Wholley (Danvers, Mass.).

"I also think we've got as good a trio of goalies as anyone in Budge Gere (Clinton, N. Y.), Terry Guiney (Canton, Mass.) and Cook.

"The forwards, led by Captain Jim Cooper (Rochester, Minn.), are adequate and can score. Above all, they are hustling fools. We should have scoring punch on all three lines.

"From these optimistic statements you might think we have it. made but let me advise you that this Ivy League race is going to be the toughest, tightest and most exciting in the history of the league. Defense may be the deciding factor, and consequently we will continue to stress it throughout the season."
