In tribute to his Dartmouth service and contributions to civic life, Charles M. French '24 (r) received Dartmouth's Alumni Award at the annual dinner of the Dartmouth Club of Cleveland on February 26. In making the presentation, N. Page Worthington '33 (1) president of the Dartmouth Alumni Council, read the following citation:
Richard Hovey wrote about Dartmouth men having the "granite of New Hampshire in their muscles and their brains." We would like to testify to the rugged qualities that you exhibit as a sturdy son of Eleazar who continues to enjoy skiing, horseback riding, and many other outdoor activities defying blizzards, fair or foul weather, and advancing years.
Following graduation from Dartmouth in 1924 you entered the lumber business in Cleveland, and have been president and director of the Great Lakes Box Company since 1949. You have always served generously in Cleveland civic and community affairs — in youth movements, in educational activities, in politics, and as a member of your Episcopal Church Vestry. You are currently working on provision of facilities for people in retirement.
In Dartmouth affairs your devoted service has been constant over many years. You served as secretary and president of the Cleveland Alumni Club. You have been Alumni Fund agent for your class and are now chairman of the Bequest and Estate Planning Committee of the Class of 1924. You were co-chairman of the Capital Gifts Campaign for the Cleveland region and you served on the Alumni Council 1955-57.
For all of your distinctions in serving Dartmouth, and for other aspects of your career, we are pleased to present you with the Dartmouth Alumni Award.
