On February 16 Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller '30 created an 11-member committee to study the impact on the state's economy of a proposed $1.50 an hour state minimum wage. He designated Courtney C.Brown, Dean of the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University, as chairman, and included in the committee representatives of business, labor, and minority groups. It is indeed a tribute to Courtney's reputation as a keen analyst and adept organizer that he has been named chairman of this most important committee assignment.
Honor was again bestowed upon Herbert F. Darling, senior partner in the H.F. Darling Engineering Company, when on February 17 he received the "engineer of the year" award from the Erie County Chapter, New York State Society of Professional Engineers. Herb and Bertha were vacationing in Florida so the award was accepted by the junior partner, Herbert F. Darling Jr. '55. Their heavy construction work includes tunnels, bridges, foundations, etc. Herb this year celebrates 37 years in construction engineering, and on Sept. 9 he and Bertha will celebrate their 37th wedding anniversary. Indeed, they are happy grandparents of four grandchildren. Congratulations to both of you! Address 790 Lebrun Road, Buffalo 26, N.Y.
We note with sorrow the death on February 13 of our classmate Lawrence "Pete"Wolff. He was associated for nearly 28 years with the firm of Frankel & Company, Inc. insurance brokers. The new Alumni College will be in session at that time, and there will be considerable activity in Hanover with plays, concerts, and interesting art exhibits, etc. at Hopkins Center. A block of ten rooms has already been reserved for our class at Hanover Inn. Make your reservations early, mentioning our Class of 1926 informal reunion.
Fortieth Reunion - June 1966 - HaroldTrefethen, chairman of the Reunion Committee, has announced that tentative bookings have been made at the Hanover Inn, The Inn Motor Lodge, and one of the best smaller dormitories has been assigned to our class where the class tent will be set up for us. Accommodations will thus be available to suit everyone's taste. Less than a buck a week in the piggy bank will keep you and yours in Hanover during our fortieth reunion only 26 months from now.
ANNIVERSARIES
Stewart H. "Junk" Anthony will complete this July, as secretary, 35 years of service with the Cleveland Trust Company; and on June 2 he and Harriet will observe their 30th wedding anniversary. Congratulations!
Arthur J. Alexander reports that by sheer accident he started 36 years ago in an unusual field, - that of selling shoes by mail order; and he has been at it ever since. Quite recently he established himself as a mail order consultant "and I'm haying a real good time." The specialty now is a line of high style Italian and Spanish shoes and boots imported by one of his accounts. Art and his wife Edith have three daughters, two sons-in-law, and two granddaughters to date. Address 285 Moraine Street, Brockton, Mass.
Phil Benjamin, one of our few remaining bachelors, quietly celebrates his 35th year at Allegheny College. Following three years at Princeton Graduate College, Phil began in 1929 at Allegheny in the English Department and since 1942 he has been librarian at the Reis Library. Address Allegheny College, Meadville, Pa.
Chuck Abbott has now rounded out more than 35 years in the investment management business in Buffalo, with Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith, Inc. On April 3 Chuck and Lois celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary, and noted that they now have two grandchildren! They expect to be in Denmark and France early this fall. Daughter Sallie and her husband are now living in Oak Ridge, Tenn., where he is with the Atomic Energy Commission. Address 251 Argonne Drive, Kenmore 17, N.Y.
Walter R. Armstrong and Mary Eleanor Mook were married 35 years ago last month (March 23). Walt, having left Hanover ahead of most of us, has spent nearly 40 years in railroad construction and maintenance engineering with some of the better known, and one of the lesser known, railroads, including Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, Western Pacific, and for the past 26 years with the Nevada Northern Railway Company of which he has been Superintendent and Chief Engineer since 1951. The Nevada Northern is a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation and although not as long as the other railroads, it is nevertheless just as wide!
Discharge of my civic responsibilities has not measured up to the records I read in 1926 news letters, but I did serve seven years on the White Pine County Regional Planning Commission, with three terms as chairman. I have been somewhat of a "joiner" working through the "chairs" in the organizations, to be past president of the Ely Rotary Club, past master of the Masonic ' Lodge, past president of the Ely Scottish Rite Club, past President of El Steptoe Shrine Club, et cetera. At present I am stuck with the jobs of secretary of the Masons and of the Shrine Club.
Last May I suffered what the doctor called "acute posterior myocardial infraction," with the result that I am now allowed to come home from the office twice per day to take naps. My employer has been most generous and understanding about this, even when I show up on the golf course after the afternoon nap! Have not ventured more than 9 holes, however.
Ely is on two transcontinental highways, U.S. 50 and U.S. 6, and I sure would like to see somebody.
Walt's railroad career was interrupted during World War II when he was a It. colonel in the Army's Transportation Corps, and the recipient of two battle stars. His son, William David, was Dartmouth '59. Walt and Mary are grandparents. Address East Ely, Nev.
Kier M. Boyd, our tennis champion of days gone by, this year celebrates 37 years with Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation at Pittsburgh. Since 1955 he has been Manager of the Sales Service Division. Kier and Marion will celebrate their 37th wedding anniversary on October 15. Their son, Kier T. is a supervisor of the Crypto-Analysis and Translation Department of the F.B.I, in Washington. Their daughter Janice spent a few years as a professional dancer in ballet and musical comedy, - had a long run with "Brigadoon" in New York followed by a 3½ year tour of United States and Canada. She is now secretary to the director of the Research Laboratory at Allegheny General Hospital.
Kier says "The thing that impresses me most about the passing of the years is looking in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE for our class notes and finding them so close to the beginning of this feature, rather than near the close as they once were." Address 155 Bea-conview Road, Pittsburgh 37.
George P. Borglum has devoted the last 38 years (exclusive of several years with the Office of War Information during World War II) to the education of youth. From 1949 to 1959 he was chairman of the French Department at Wayne State University, and since 1959 he has been Director of the Modern Language Audio-Visual Research Project, College of Education at Wayne State University under a grant from the National Defense Education Act. George and Imogene recently celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary. As to grandchildren George reports "Our two older girls have three children each, but the first five were girls. Number six was a boy, born in New Orleans. We went down there immediately to make sure they weren't kidding. Third daughter is married but, with her husband, is still in school. We count our many blessings." Address 319 Crane Ave., Royal Oak, Mich.
Frank "Pete" Bailey has devoted 36 years to the education of our youth at M.I.T., Mt. Holyoke College, and most recently at Kenyon College. During the academic year he has been on sabbatical leave, and he and Carolyn have spent much of their time, during their 37th year of married life refurbishing an old farmhouse on the outskirts of Gambier. They moved into their newly acquired "retirement" home just before Christmas. "We are having a wonderful time trying to bring back to productivity the meadows and pastures; and thoroughly love our kennel of lively Welsh Corgis which is Carolyn's hobby." Frank and Carolyn have summered for the past 15 years on Martha's Vineyard Island where they are usually joined by their son and daughter and families, including three grandchildren. Address Box 307, Gambier, Ohio.
