LETTERS of acceptance for next fall's entering class were mailed April 15 to 1270 successful applicants — a number that will eventually shake down to the freshman class of approximately 800 men that the Admissions Office is aiming at. Because of multiple applications on the part of every aspiring Ivy Leaguer, the numerical allowance for attrition has become a delicate part of the admission director's job. If the formula fails, there is the waiting list, and Dartmouth has placed an additional 200 applicants in this category.

Dartmouth's 1270 acceptances were made from 4200 completed applications. This was an increase of 13.2% over last year in the number of applicants. All the Ivy League colleges had increased applications, ranging from Princeton's 9.9% to Brown's 24.3.%. Pennsylvania reported 22.1%, Yale 17.2%, Dartmouth 13.2%, Harvard 12.9%, Columbia 12.5%, and Cornell 11.5%. All the colleges also reported an increase in the number of Negro applicants, due to special enrollment effort, and in the number accepted.

Mrs. George F. Theriault has been appointed Assistant Dean of Summer Programs at Dartmouth College, Dean Waldo Chamberlin has announced. Mrs. Theriault, wife of George F. Theriault '33, Lincoln Filene Professor of Human Relations, will be responsible for women's activities at the College during the summer term, and will act as an assistant to Dean Chamberlin in planning other summer programs throughout the year.

Mrs. Theriault, the former Ray Grant Speight, received an A.B. degree from Radcliffe College. She is a daughter of Harold E. B. Speight, former professor of philosophy and biography at Dartmouth. She has been associated with Dartmouth's Language Laboratory since it was established in 1958, and has been its director during the 1963-64 academic year.
